Engine size is identical,

Both are of a 2.5 litre capacity,

Both are Turbo charged + intercooled

Both produce similar power and torque. Although in a defender the power was down on the 200 Tdi, compared to the same engine in the Discovery and Range Rover.

200 Tdi (defender) - 103 bhp
200 Tdi (disco/rangy) - 111bhp

300 Tdi (all variants) - 111 bhp

Different belt drives as mentioned, also Turbo etc.

The 300 Tdi is basically the development of the 200 Tdi, offering more refinement + bottom end is supposed to be stronger.

Both are very good engines though, much better than any diesels Land Rover had produced before.

another thing i wud like to sort out

only the late 1998 and 1997 models of 300tdi have any electronics on them at all and that was a simple egr to improve emissions which you can remove so many people seem to think they have its annoying

i dont know where you are both gettin this 103bhp figure from, im 99% sure its 107......

103bhp figure comes from my mate who used to be head of servicing at epson land rovers and he got it from offical rover release i had this conversation with him just last week cuz my mate (another 1 yes i have atleast 2) was puzzled y i pull away from him on the A1 when we get going over 60mph

the 200 tdi defender engine I put in my 90 gives me around 29-30 mpg with the LT77S box and defender transfer box and colway AT 235 70 R16's. Thermostat needs replacing, so it's running a little cold just now too. The 110 I had last year gave 32 mpg, and is why I got the NA engine out of 90, it was never better than 24 mpg, and would only do 38 mph up British camp in Malvern, with the 200 tdi the 90 will now reach 65 mph by the top of the same hill! Top speed seen recently was 82 mph. Quite pleased I managed to overtake a disco on the hill up to Hirwaun out of Merthyr!! Didn't expect to do that.....

Can someone please explain to me how a DIESEL engine can "run rich" ?

I've only got about 50 years of experience, and it's a new one to me.

Your engine might be SICK, mistimed, low compression, injectors way off adjustment, and stuff like that, but running rich?

This I need to hear about.

charles i bought a 200tdi disco locally last week, so im afraid im no longer a potential buyer for yours! it was a bit far anyway!

was yer selling a complete disco charles??

I bought a whole runner 200 tdi recently .. a Disco ..... but the chassis and body are both COMPLETELY gonners.

However, all the mechanicals and leccy stuff works fine, and it starts and runs well.

question is, now I have a 2.5 td in the lightweight, what dio I do with this one?

Was goiing to stick ... the good chassis off YELLA on it, but the body isn't up to it.

Ideas?

No idea, but he said it was set up a little different from normal to run 'rich' (smoke?) for better off road slow running. He stated it could be adjusted back. I will use it mainly on the raod.
He is an agricultural engineer and seemed glued up.

Me I have not the faintest, other than where to put the diesel, I have very little mechanical knowledge
What I do know is this ....
It does not use any oil (or at worse maybe 1/4qtr of litre every 1000 miles
It seems to pull very well up hill
It starts instantly every morning
However ....
Strong headwind to day and it struggled to get to sixty.
Sometimes it smokes badly on startup, occasionally it doesn't smoke at all (This could be me getting use to starting a diesel and timing the glow plugs)
On overrun going down hill when cold it smokes blue/white smoke. When warm it does not smoke at all.

CLUED up maybe?
And "agricultural engineer" ..... says it all!

There is NO WAY to make a diesel "run rich" other than to open the max fuel screw TOO FAR, and cause EXCESS fuelling, but all that does is to make smoke, reduce power and waste fuel.

Don't let him adjust it back. Get someone good to adjust the injection TIMING, and perhaps have the injectors taken out, and spring pressures set.

Colder the morning, the longer the glow. A good plan on very cold mornings is 20 seconds of glow, 10 - 20 seconds wait, then 20 seconds glow and fire her up.

Thanks for your help

You may have hit the problem on the head .............
That's just the symptons I have.
Poor MPG,
lack of power = reduced top speed.
Smokes (expecially when cold, it always seems as if it's overchoking

Matter of interest where (approx) is the fuel screw? I vaguely remember the guy pointing somewhere to the offside of the engine that the adjuster was there.

I don't want to mess, just interested.
