Not really, it’s just that the first thing you associate with loss of drive on a pre-’06MY L322 is the front propshaft spline failure. The fact that you can still drive in reverse and that the spline failure is usually accompanied by horrendous grinding noises means it doesn’t sound likely to be your issue. The fact that you can reverse also indicates that it’s a transmission fault rather than the transfer box.

The biggest ‘giveaway’ with the 5L40-E is metallic debris in the fluid (like glitter almost). This is a clear indication of the torque converter lock-up clutch having worn its lining away. The debris then clogs up the valve block solenoids and often leads to clutches burning out. Probably best to drain off some of the fluid and check.

A re-manufactured 5L40-E fitted for £2000 with a 2 year warranty is a fair price.

Guys
The place I found offering to do the recon unit, should they flush it all through incase debris has got passed through any of the system/cooling system? And is it the norm to supply new pistons, solenoids, seals, speed sensors etc??

Just want to be as knowledgeable as possible if I'm going to be paying out so much

yes and yes and yes the system should be total flushed ,lines ,coolers' and anything else that comlpetes and work with the system everything. get in writing that they flushed the system. and new torque converter as that can contaminate the system

on My l322 the trans failsafe message popped up when i started the engine - but the car runs fine - iv been having problems with battery drain - could a low battery cause these faults to appear ?

as the fault has not come up since ? :p

Yes:)

During winter is the worst time for trans fail safe message to appear.
If it's dark, cold & raining & everything is on in the car this message can appear quite frequent due to the demand on the battery.
When this message appears with no drive except for 10 foot or so, then it's a good sign the gearbox has failed.

For a 2k rebuild, the only parts replaced are the offending items.

thought so, i did hear that rangerovers come up with all sorts of faults when the batterys low. my gearbox drive is fine - so no failure at this time !!

now just need to work out if i have a battery drain or my alternator is f*ucked ?? are the alternators common failures ??

thanks for the help
