Not really, it’s just that the first thing you associate with loss of drive on a pre-’06MY L322 is the front propshaft spline failure. The fact that you can still drive in reverse and that the spline failure is usually accompanied by horrendous grinding noises means it doesn’t sound likely to be your issue. The fact that you can reverse also indicates that it’s a transmission fault rather than the transfer box.
The biggest ‘giveaway’ with the 5L40-E is metallic debris in the fluid (like glitter almost). This is a clear indication of the torque converter lock-up clutch having worn its lining away. The debris then clogs up the valve block solenoids and often leads to clutches burning out. Probably best to drain off some of the fluid and check.
A re-manufactured 5L40-E fitted for £2000 with a 2 year warranty is a fair price.
