driving home today and my TD6 coughed couple of times, beeped and came up 'trans failsafe prog'. i tried to get somewhere safe to stop but it seeme to be revving freely, but had no drive?

anyone? bemble in particular... please ask any questions if it'll help diagnose the problem

also, if mr AA wants to tow me home, is that a big no no as with all auto's?

Not good then mate, read online last night that it sometime locks in 3rd or 4th gear so you can 'limp home' safely, but she'd lost all drive, just revving freely, no drive at all??

Was wondering if maybe torque convertor has died, or transfer box/motor? Or maybe im wishful thinking.....

Data
was on my list of 'to do's (was top of list too grrr). Would low oil level cause complete loss of drive though? I left it for 10 minutes to cool, then tried again, drive returned for about 10 seconds, just enough to reverse her into a space, then it went again??

Sounds like box failure have the ecu tested to confirm.
When checking the oil level it must be done at a specific temp not cold like the older classics

vogusey

Do you mean get the car ecu checked, or the gearbox ecu?

And i did read about checking oil level at a specific temp on TD6's/L322's, think it was between 30 and 40 degs?

Silly question, how is easiest to measure the oil temp in the box, if I havent got any software etc? Will a thermometer in the hole work???? (not my hole, the fill hole for the gearbox lol)

There is a guy in Newark he does the whole job remove and refit was impressed with it
It should be temp checked with a tested connected as there is a temp sensor in the box so will give a different reading to a infa red joby
And yes I do refeere to the gearbox ecu fault memory

john, not sure when you mean did i check the level? when i bought it or yesterday when she died on me?

been reading on a bmw forums as its the same box, just find it hard to believe low oil could cause complete loss of drive? (although i would jump for joy if that is all it is)

Yes low oil can cause failure as the pump cannot pick up any oil to the servos that operate the clutches and bands that activate and change the gears

when was the last time you check oil before the transmission failure

On the 5L40-E transmission, if failsafe is triggered while driving then all three shift solenoids will be de-energised which should leave you in 5th gear.

Your vehicle has definitely had the Q041 front propshaft/final drive upgrade carried out at some point?

Cheers people

Bemble, the engine was revving freely, too freely almost (as it obviously didnt have any resistance), we managed to get her to reverse up a slight incline to park her in a proper space, would this not of been possible had the trans died completely?

Spoke to a Autobox specialist this morning local to me and £2000 supplied and fitted with 2yr/24k warranty, I guess this is about the norm?

I know you are very highly thoguht of when it comes to the L322 boxes Bemlbe, are there any things I can check/test/inspect myself before taking her in for open heart surgery, and me being £2000 down :(

Thanks again everyone

Bemlbe
Im sure I had the paperwork for that mod done, I will check later, or look under her when she is returned to me, but pretty sure it was done on recall before I bought her.

Why did you ask? Could it of had a knock on effect if it wasnt done?

Thanks again Mr B
