When I switch for high-low it makes a clunk,if I switch it a few times just clunks, violently back and forth

tRIED IN NEUTRAL FROM LOW-HIGH,HIGH-LOW,CLUNK CLICK,CLUNK.BASTARD THING IS READY TO BE BURNED.
The transfer box will clunk/click when it changes from hi to lo but you should not have any drive ,transfer changes should only occur when the main gearbox is in neutral in fact you should have a select neutral message on the dash.

If I put the selector in neutral with foot on brake, select hi/low the car clunks violently like its trying to engage,i don't fancy removing cable and selecting a gear by hand with engine running while under the car,bit scary that.

This is driving me nuts.if I select high/low it changes into high and low on dash and you can hear it move.when I select any gear, reverse, drive, neutral etc it sounds like a load of cogs munching and no drive.since battry went flat it now says suspension inactive and hac inactive.is it safe to say gearbox is fekked?

I would just check that there’s no fuse in position 37 and then put a fuse in and see if the transfer box will select (transfer box) neutral. If it does, remove the fuse again and see if the transfer box will re-select high range, then report back.

P.S. For the avoidance of doubt, we’re talking about transfer box neutral here, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the transmission being placed in neutral using the gear selector. The purpose of fuse 37 is to allow the vehicle to be towed on its wheels without rotating the transmission output shaft

Hi Bemble,
No fuse in posision 37,so I put one in,transfer box in neutral, tried selecting high/low and I can hear it change and on dash on 4x4 info it appears to be changing high to low when selected,if I put the car in drive, reverse, neutal I get a loud crunching and no drive.thank you for your help.

So, before the vehicle drove forwards no matter whether you selected D, N or R but now it won’t drive at all and just makes a crunching noise?

Phil

yes, thats correct-very weird as it was moving forward in reverse, neutral or drive, now nothing and loud crunching when any gear selected.

Had an x5 that would only stay still in p.
R n d all made it go forward and stick in 1st gear. Same basic gm gearbox.
dropped the box oil and it was black.
Did a fluid change for the lad and then it was fine for a couple week then it went back to doing it. Ended up changing the box.
