Alright guys.... I desperately need some help.

2004 Land Rover 110 TD5 - 137,000 kms on the clock.

For the past year or so I have had intermittent starting problems. Hot and cold. More so hot starts though. It has never failed to start, just may take a couple of times. Over the past year I have just been tinkering with bit here and there and seeing if the problem resolves itself.

So far over the past year it has basically had the following:
air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, centrifuge rotor, aux belt, belt tensioner, injector harness, cleaned ecu plugs, checked relays/fuses.

A couple of months ago I had a mate hook up his nanocom and it gave 04-03, 10-06, 10-07, 15-02, 21-06. From what I could find from research, these particular codes are not much of a concern and not related.

Yesterday, I thought I would change the injector copper washers and o-rings. Thought this may be the problem. Followed it all by the book and did a pretty good job of it, or so I thought. Primed and purged (the landy, not me), and the thing WILL NOT start. I have drained the battery trying. Tried purging and priming again. No luck. Engine turns and turns but will not fire. The injectors seals (some of them) did look like they were leaking when I changed them, they didn't appear to be in overly good shape. I gathered that when I had finished it probably would have just had the same old trouble starting, but would fire up. Now it turns out I have killed it by "fixing it".

Anywho, Thought I would go out and try it again today, went through exactly the same process including new seals/orings, just incase I stuffed something up. Went through it ALL again. It will not fire. Just turns and turns. It sounds like there may be some air sucking at the filter, but it's always hard to tell. The pump it whining a little, louder for the first second of priming, then quite quiet.

I guess I am wondering what I could have done by fixing the injector seals. By fixing them could I have compounded the problem somehow by fixing the seals due to pressures? Is it likely to be the fuel pump? But why just after I fixed the seals?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Please help me with the non-starter!

Cheers.

undo one of the injector pipes at the top. does fuel flow when you turn the engine over? that's the first thing I would do to identify what the problem is!

Did you remove all of the injectors at the same time ? As far as im aware they need to be fitted back in the same cylinder or they have to be re programmed, but as said crack off a nut and make sure fuel is geting through

No nut to crack off with td5. Is injector loom back in properly? Are all injector plungers located?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I did the injectors one-by-one so there was no chance of me stuffing up the order.

I have triple checked all connectors/plugs.

It has to be the fuel supply issue right??? The only thing I did not do was syringe the fuel out of the cylinder - will that cause all these problems??

Is there any smoke when cranking?

does it make any attempt to start while cranking ?? did you adjust the injectors properly after install ( all the way down and back it off one turn ) ? did you try holding the accelerator pedal all the way down while cranking it ?

Ratty - got my wife to check - no smoke when cranking.

Defcrazy - No attempt to start when cranking at all. I assume I adjusted the injectors properly - I did as you described, but will try again. Yes, I held the accelerator pedal down all the way.

Thanks for the replies dudes. I will persist until I find the cause.

I'm guessing by the fact that the fuel pump is whining, the inertia switch is ok.

Turn the ignition and and listen to the fuel pump. Let the pump keep running until it goes quiet. Then turn the ignition off and do it again. Repeat the process about 5 times. IF it was a disco you could pump the accelerator pedal 5 times to get the pump to start the purge cycle.

After you have purged the system then deck the throttle and crank the engine. After 10 seconds of cranking it should pump extra fuel through which will purge the injectors.

After doing this does it want to start or if not is there any smoke?

Ratty.

Have done all as you say - with no luck at all. Took it all apart and did it all again. The pump now sounds quite loud (I think "squeals" kinda best describes the sound) for the first couple of seconds during each prime then a quiet hum.....

I did as another guy said on an aussie forum and and put a petrol soaked rag in front on of the air inlet to see if it was a fuel supply problem - and it FIRED UP! So I now know its a fuel supply problem - but where should I start?? The fuel pump or FPR ?? or something else? I know it's gonna means $$, but I need to get it running and want to avoid taking it to the shop and have them charge me heaps!

I changed the fuel filter just to rule out the cheap things first. It made the fuel pump louder, alot of gurgling and squelching, etc. Still no go.

The fuel pump is pumping fuel at a good rate to the filter, but I am unable to test the actual pressure... Should I change the fuel pump, which is a pain on the Deefer, or should I be looking at something past the fuel filter nearer the engine? No leaks at all to speak of by the way.

Take off the fuel line to the regulator and see if you are getting fuel (should be more than 60psi) which should spout out a good distance.

Yep... fuel pressure seems good at the regulator. Can't specifically test it, but it spurted a fair way.

When I took the injectors out to do the seals again there was diesel in the cylinder head and around the injectors, so I gather it's getting through. Just not sure of the pressure.

The pump seems like the noises its making are getting louder. It really strangles the cat now for the first couple of seconds of priming and as soon as another priming session starts, it does exactly the same thing.

No leaks at all that I can find. I'm thinking the pump is cactus. Is this the most obvious thing? Cos, I now have a choice of ordering a pump and replacing it myself, or getting a tow and the shop to probably reaplce 5 things that didn't need it and charge through the nose for it.

when it fired up on the rag did it carry on running or did it cut out again once the rag was removed?

change the fuel pump . yesterday i removed the pressure regulator from my disco and the fuel filter and it woulndt start after (after many attempts of bleeding ). i had a used pump and i thought i would try it , and it started first try:suspicious:

Hi all having the same problem re starting after changing injector seals. Have done all the checks, purges etc. I have noticed that when cranking the fuel gauge is very erratic and I am told there is smoke from the exhaust. I am charging up the battery for a couple of days before trying again. Any suggestions? Cheers

cut out when the rag was removed.

I'd try tow starting it, I hope you had a manual, but being the US I suspect maybe not!

My friend and I have battled this issue on his TD5 for years, first it was the injector washers, then he did the pump, fuel regulator blah blah. Almost every time the brute was a pig to start again the first time, each time we got it going on a tow start and then that was it. We were never quite sure why but it was discovered after the battery went flat from trying the sometimes over 40s of cranking.
