As my doors are really rotten with metal worm etc etc and finding a good pair of second hand ones is like trying to get my mate to buy a round ( it's do able but bloody hard work) I was thinking of fitting my landy with these doors

they are much cheaper than the direct replacement and I kinda like the sliding window style.
what do you nice people think is it a cardinal sin or will it make my landy a work or art?
 
It may be that I'm biased towards a soft roof, but there's no doubt in my mind that the two part is far better. The security isn't quite as good, they're probably a tiny bit more draughty and can be a bit awkward with car park ticket machines, but it hasn't put me off.

strange I got the impression these doors were better for security not sure how it can be awkward with ticket machines but I guess I'll find out if I fit them, and really are they more draughty, they cant be really esp as my current ones have a 2cm gap at the bottom and a smaller gap at the top
 
Series doors are even more rubbish than Defender ones, especially aftermarket ones. Flimsy, draughty, leaky.

There is no cheap route to good doors I'm afraid, unless you have the time/skill to repair your existing ones. For maybe £750 a side you could build up some brand new Tdci-style ones using some of the old bits and some new bits. Or take a chance on some second-hand off eBay.
 
I maybe a bit biased but I have them on my 110 and love them... Old school, nothing to go wrong, easy to replace If you damage etc.actually a bit like my 200tdi!
 
Best solution is to find some secondhand series doors, throw away the tops and replace with Rocky Mountain tops. Make sure you use burst proof door catches though

so far the ones I've seen on ebay are in worse condition than mine. As for repairing the existing ones the only bits I can find is the outer skin and the bit that goes along the bottom. Could be alot of work and still end up with the same problem I have now. plus by the time i buy all the bits required i would probably be cheaper buying new doors

Not got a problem with series doors myself. I think Paul posted those same doors a lot cheaper a few days ago. Would be fairly easy to improve them with extra soundproofing.

Flimsy, draughty, leaky. Similar to what is on many old 90 and Def. And at least the series ones are cheap, replacing def door, is a fortune.

The newish, but slightly bent,drivers door on mine, doesn't seem to be any better for corrosion resistance than the older ones!
 
I meant second hand Tdci type - I wouldn't put the older style on a vehicle I was keeping.

They really are a world apart.

sorry I'm being thick again, but you lost me there, did you mean second hand Tdci type doors were draughty and leak. and why would you not put the older style on a vehicle you intended to keep. mind these are older style, not older doors they have been remodelled to fit newer defenders
 
When I said get second hand ones in my original post I meant second hand Tdci style.

They are pressed from sheet steel rather than welded box, with steel skins so no electrolytic corrosion. And the whole assembly is zintec coated. As a result they don't rot anywhere like as badly as the older style. Can be fitted with electric windows and central locking easily using genuine parts too. Being all steel they're nice and heavy and feel much nicer to close - almost like a proper car.

That's why I wouldn't use old style doors, in ten years they'll be rotten again.

can you point me in the direction of a supplier of these doors please
and as far as the old style doors go, pretty sure there are things you can do to keep the doors looking as new for longer than ten years?
 
there was a thread on this only a couple of days ago...

i pointed out there that you could buy td5 style doors with steel skins, galvanised, just like the tdci ones - then you can use all the existing hardware

The supplier is Land Rover.

Sure you can do things to improve the older doors such as galvanising and cavity wax, and that would be a good half-way house.

I think you have missed a valuable point that perhaps I did not make clear in my original post and that was cost. I have just seen a used Tdci door drivers side only on ebay for £600 minimum bid. A new set of galvanised doors direct replacement is about £800. if I could afford them I would have just brought them, but at the moment I cant the series ii style doors looked pretty cool and are alot cheaper, but if they pan out to be useless in that they are draughty and leak then I'll just keep milking my boss for overtime till I can afford the direct replacements at £800-£900
