my temperature meter on my Td5 disco is rising very slowly. When i am starting the engine in the morning, the meter rises just above the blue line. After about 15 miles it suddenly rises fast from the blue line to normal level. Is my thermostat not working correctly or is this normal for a Disco 2 manual gear?

Due to the way that the temperature gauge works on the Td5 Disco 2, it is notoriously inaccurate.
What it actually does as you're watching it doesn't mean much. It is little more than an indicator of warmth in the engine. By the time it shows that the engine is overheating, the damage has probably been done.
If you want an accurate picture of the engine temperature you'd be well advised to install a separate engine thermometer gauge or read the engine temperature by using live data on a compatible code reader.

@brian47 Im currently looking for a D2 TD5 so this is helpful info. Do you have a linky for a suitable temperature gauge as you mention please?

At the moment John, sorry I don't. I would use my Nanocom if I ever needed additional temperature readings. I think that @sierrafery has done this sort of thing, or at least he has some further information on it.
I can say that the Td5 engine does take a bit longer to reach normal operating temperature than say the V8.

thank you Brian, so there is no need to worry now. The heater inside is warm, so there must be more warmth than the indicator shows.

Juko,

Here is a link to a gauge that many others have used. I know it says oil temperature, but reads the advert, it will do several depending on what function you want. It is also only 37mm as opposed to the usual 52mm size, but if you want 52mm there are plenty available.

Mine is working on a similar way. It stays just above blue and when it moves it goes quickly to normal. I have checked with nanocom, was correct.
