Hi folks,

Currently rebuilding the 110 TD5. Only issue I'm coming up against is that I didn't take any photos of the starter connections when removing it.

Putting it back together I know both the power supply (direct from battery) and alternator need to connect to it; but theres only one connection point with minimal room for the two ring connectors (can get them on but the nut isn't fully on).

I cant for the life of me remember removing them, and no photos mean if anyone has advice (or want to tell me I'm being thick) then that would be ideal!

Thanks!

Does it not have a main live and spade connector connection along with an earth cable?
It’s got the main live, and then from a separate loom the spade plus a brown wire. According to wiring diagram it’s a brown from the starter to alternator but it just doesn’t seem right.

This is how I have it at the moment but who knows, she’s not getting started until I’m confident 😂

That looks like you have a nut on the stud then two cables and another nut.
Can you remove the first nut, then out the two cables on and then the fixing nut?
Seems like there isn't an earth, must have been thinking of something else.
I would go an have a look but it's raining here.

Earths through the mounting surely?

Yes most likely. I must have been thinking of the Series starter which has an earth strap from the mounting bolt to the chassis.
You could always check the tightness of the earth strap from the batt or chassis to the engine. I only know about Discos.

Yup, there's a brown wire from the alternator and a wire from the battery that go on the same terminal, plus there's a small wire (red inthe picture above) that has a spade terminal with a plastic cover on which is the one that engages the solenoid. As above, I think there's too many nuts on that terminal. And a spring washer too!

It's difficult to see from the photo, but there should be two nuts, the first one to hold the contact in place on the solenoid and the second to hold the terminals on. Any more is a crowd!!

Had a look at mine, you most definitely have too many nuts.
Take the cables off, take the nut and spring washer off. Put the cables back on, put spring washer and nut on and do it up. Keep the spare nut somewhere safe for future use.

You might want to space the wires away from the body of the starter a little way, so they don't short out on the casing, but I'm sure that on mine you can take all the nuts off that post terminal and it doesn't come loose, so do whatever fits best.

It should have a nut holding the post on which holds the cables away from the body of the starter. At the moment it has two nuts holding it on.
I should imagine the OP put the original nut back on the post when he took the cables off for safe keeping and has since forgotten.

Sorted that issue, left as it is initially and it’s started no bother a number of times. Issue now is it keeps on forcing off the Fuel line into the engine and creating a diesel waterfall
