I bought a 2003 td5 to tie us over whilst I get round to sorting the disco 3 out.

Of course last night the little swine started playing up...

It had been a bit harder to start for a couple of weeks, needing a good few cranks and pumps on the throttle.

On the motorway, started just sounding kind of rough? And lumpy. Then a few miles later it gradually lost more and more power over a 3 or 4 mile stretch until it eventually cut out.

I couldn't hear the fuel pump so I assumed it was that, as it did feel like fuel starvation.

After a few minutes I tried bumping it and it fired up, but only just and I managed to limp it home at 30mph max but still lumpy as.

So I've put a new fuel pump on it this morning, and been through the priming sequence. Won't fire up though. Fires with a smidge if easy start but then just dies.

I've checked for diesel in the oil and seems ok. Fpr, is hissing is really loud. I don't remember our old ones being like that.

Not looked at the ECU loom yet. Would oil in the ECU make it do this? I've never had one with the issue.

Had a brand new big CCA battery the other week and it's cranking over like a trooper.
 
If the fpr is hissing, maybe it's not letting any pressure build up?

Or maybe there's a blockage.. fool filter?

Just a guess. I'm no good on diesel
 
I've just managed to get it started by towing it. Took a while then it burst into life

Starts off the key again 40 minutes later

Hmm do i trust it?

Got to go to thurso on Monday....
 
When I changed my fuel pump I had to do the bleed sequence 4 or 5 times before it cleared all the air. My symtems before were same as yours.

Yes I have done work on the fuel system and sometimes 5 or 6 purges are needed, once it starts to run it should be OK, if the pump was the problem.
 
Hmm it's still playing up.

Runs ok but starting it needs a couple of primes
 
Change fuel filter and bleed valve. Check all pipes for leaks etc. What pump did you get? If it was a cheap one off ebay get rid. I was on the phone to LR a while back my disco 2 td5 had a recall many moons ago for fuel pump failure. Worth a phone call to see if your model has had it done or has an outstanding recall on there database. It's a long shot like but worth a phone call.
 
The local Kandy dealer is utterly useless.
The AA fixed what they couldn't on our 3... What does that tell you.

I'm inclined to think injector seals.

If it was fuel filter it would be struggling for fuel all the time, but it's not. It's just become a starting issue now. I wonder if the greater demand on the fuel pump had killed it, so although it now runs again the underlying issue isn't resolved.
 
It just cut out on the Mrs, seals , filter, valve ordered. Just gonna replace the lot.
 
...and do check all lines, filters, sedimenter from tank to pump are clear.
Had another TD5 on here recently with similar problem, found tons of sh1t in the lines etc and a stone in the tank!
 
All fixed.

Had some spare time today, it was the copper seals.

One of them was badly eaten away from where combustion gases had been passing.

Phew, at least it was an easy job.
