My 90 TD5 is now due a service and rather than splashing out 200 squid (give or take) Im thinking of just doing it myself and havin more money for deisel!!!
Its 5yr old, 25k on the clock and its previous owner had it serviced at a dealership (full service - all oils etc at a bargain price of £460!!!!) 11 months ago.
Had a look online and see there is a lot of service kits available ranging from £15 - £60. Just wondering if someone could recommend what parts to buy etc or what service kit...where from etc
Any other general advice on doing a service greatly appreciated.

buy kit and change all oils like gear box ,transfer box axles as well as engine,remember to do centrafugal oil filter as well as filter bearmach or britpart kit both okay,we have used both over 20 years never had any problems

just another silly question, whats the difference between a minor service and a major one?
 
i think the minor doesnt cover running gear, just a check of levels rather than oil chasnges.

If you search the web, you will be able to find a service shedule for a defender TD5 which tells you exactly what a garage will check and change etc.

YOu will find that very useful, and a Haynes would probably be a good investment.
 
i would definately change all oils once a year (axles ,gearbox,transfer box)land rover service schedules are not about long term life of vehicle
 
some cheap fuel filters (not mentioning the name of any companies that might have YELLOW parts) can play up on TD5's. Contrary to common belief there is also a difference between the fuel filter on a defender and the fuel filter on a discovery. It doesn't appear to make any difference which you fit but if you put the 2 filter type side by side there is a visible difference. I try and stick to bearmach, fram or genuine filters if I can.
 
Thanks guys, haynes manual bought and service schedule downloaded......just waiting for some decent weather so I can spend a day out in the driveway.

I always thought that until Buckshot had problems with his new TD5 110 drawing in air and cutting out. He then found out that there are 2 different tpes of filter. Unles you put the 2 along side each other you wouldn't know they were any different.
 
Doing my service tomorrow, got a kit which is coopers filters and an allmakes fuel filter - in the description of the fuel filter it says "no sensor supplied, existing water sensor to be re-used" Can someone explain in very simple english.....

Hi mate i know fuc all about TD5 but you get the same with transits at the bottom of old filter a wire is there for sensor on new filter undo sensor and refit old sensor as i say this is for a transit but might be the same :)

What lazy dog says. On the bottom of the fuel filter will be either a water sensor or a water drain valve. A lot of the fuel filters you buy for the TD5 have neither in the bottom which means you will need summit to plug the hole (you should be able to take it off yer old filter). The problem is that the water drain valves often leak so if you can find a spare valve or bolt that fits, keep it in yer landy for emergency use.
