If its an aftermarket pump they are notoriously inaccurate.fitted one to mine put in 50lts then after 3 miles fuel warning light came on.fitted the sender and float from my original pump and all ok.

Fitted an OEM VDO Siemens pump a while ago - running fine but level inaccurate (empty at quarter full). Still have the original LR pump I removed, is it easy to remove the sender unit so I can do a swap? Do you know if there's a guide somewhere? Plastic always seems to break when you try and separate pieces - may as well have a go though if it's not too tricky.
 
Mine did this just after I bought it on the drive home. Took the sender out and fitted it properly and it's been fine since.
 
yes I checked the height its fine, I think ive found the culprit. there is another filter fitted to the pump body itself the pump assembly has to be dismantled to get to it,
as you can see below its well bunged up with black crap.

Mine did this all the time when running on hooky derv, the mesh filters blocked up all the time.
Also used to shag the fuel filters pdq.
 
I've had this problem of the engine stopping from fuel starvation when at or below 1/4 full. Trouble was it only did it occasionally so took some time to get to the bottom of. I seem to have fixed it by changing the pump. There is a swirl pot in the pump which is kept full by the LP pump so that air doesn't get picked up by the pump at low fuel levels. There is also a check valve in there to keep the swirl pot full at low fuel levels. If the check valve sticks open, the swirl pot level drops and the pump can pick up air when the tank level is low. I didn't get as far as stripping the pump down to confirm this so it's just a theory. However, it worked for me.
 
Mine drops off at half a tank I zero the mileage when fuel light comes on I've got 200 miles on the light. But I try keep it above. Mine happened from being stood for 6/8 months
