Afternoon,

I want to remove the exhaust manifold and refit with Wurth manifold studs, is it worth preemptively de-webbing it while its off? If so I assume it is a simple case of grinding out the webs, or is there anything special that needs doing?

Reasons for doing this is Jose from TD5inside will be tuning it in December along with fitting their fancy turbo. The idea was to stop the manifold warping before it starts, that said never had the problem on my 90...

I saw those aswell. Seems dubious to me, more bling than function though who knows.

Ive seen genuine/'new' LR de-webbed and stress relieved manifolds on ebay for around £120 they look alright.

Just prefer to do things myself if possible...

Given that seviceable second hand ones aren't too expensive it's worth having a go. While you're at it, drill and tap a hole for a pyrometer and get yourself an exhaust gas temperature gauge!

I've often toyed with the idea of getting a secondhand one off Ebay and having a play around with the grinder. Compared to what you'll be spending on tuning and turbos etc. it's got to be worth it.

Alternatively, there's a lot of this sort of thing on the market

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Exhaust-Manifold-Stainless-Steel-FOR-Land-Rover-Discovery-2-TD5-HIGH-PERFORMANCE-/142095947127?fits=Model:Defender&hash=item2115941577:g:A5MAAOSwoudW6lvE

I wonder if they're any good?

Not often you see the words 'Discovery' and 'high performance' in the same sentence .... :D

I see there's been some debate about pyrometer placement for TD5s Some people put it in the EGR blanking plate but others say that's just taking the temperature of no. 1 cylinder, so maybe it's best if you put it where all the tubes join together near the outlet. I've been thinking about this because I drive mine quite hard and I'd like an EGT gauge - I've even left a place in my aftermarket instrument console for it.

Or.... You could fit one to each and be able to see which particular cylinder is running hot/cold.

From what I could tell on Madman is the probe extends to the middle giving a better reading. If that isnt the case then Ill look into drilling and tapping the join area
