Hi all

If I attempt to go over 2000rpm (in any gear), pressing the accelerator has a negative affect on power and actually slows me down, it feels like I'm driving through treacle. I cannot get the revs over 3000rpm.

It has been running fine until last night and then this, also it takes ages to start, as if it's getting no fuel.

It now ticks over with a slight 'lump' to it.

Any ideas would be great????

Hi, a few things spring to mind with that fault. Check for oil in the injector wiring loom, pull the plug at the front of the rocker cover. If there are signs of oil pull the 2 plugs off the Engine ECU and see if the oil has made it that far. It could also be the Airflow meter or EGR valve stuck open. Disconnect the Airflow meter and see if there is a difference in running.

Just a quick update.

After the great advice yesterday I got a local chap to check the wiring and he said some oil has gone into the wiring loom, he cleaned both the fuel and air filters and looked at the EGR valve. He got it going for a little bit but then it cut out, it runs if he sprays 'something' directly into the engine!! He says the main problem is the fuel pump has dragged some sludge in and then failed, does that sound right??

Fuel pump failure doesn’t really ring true with that kind of fault. If it starts with easy start then the lift pump is working as the injectors need a supply of fuel. There is no main pump like a conventional set up so there is no suction to pull fuel from the tank. It needs the lift pump to keep a head of fuel. It’s hard to say without seeing the vehicle but it is very likely that the injector loom has bad connections because of the oil contamination. The high resistance in the connections causes a misfire which prevents the engine from starting. Easy start gives the combustion a helping hand and the engine turns over faster than just on the starter and often overcomes the misfire. When the engine is left to idle it runs very lumpy and then cuts. Has the garage pulled any codes from it?

They plugged a laptop in and no fault codes showed.

I dont want to spend £200 on a fuel pump if that's not the problem!!

I thought a blocked injector might be the cause of the rough idle but i'm still no clearer on the reseon it wouldn't start at all or go over 2000rpm when it was working.

A fuel prssure gauge can be put in the fuel line or it can be read with most good diagnostic tools. Is there still oil in the loom. It costs about £20 to replace it.
