Has anyone used one of these third party heads or have any views on them? From McDonald Landrover, Oswestry.
My head has cracked and is leaking diesel into the sump - do I go new third party or re-con genuine?

BRAND NEW TD5 CYLINDER HEAD WITH VALVES AND SPRINGS on eBay, also Engine Tuning Parts, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 04-Apr-09 12:39:49 BST)

I don't know of anyone thats had one but it is a good price. I'd like to know what they've done to overcome the usual problems.

I'd worry about fitting a recon head. Landrover says the head can't be skimmed, so I'm not sure how they recon it. Also, you don't know its history, and given the known weaknesses, you could end up with another cracked one very soon! Sorry don't know about the third party job, but might be worth a try. Remember to use steel dowels!

Hello there, ive just this morning bought one of these heads from turner engineering, brand new amc heads, very good quality £950+ vat, all in with stretch bolts and all gaskets (head, rocker cover, both manifolds, injectors and fpr) £1296.46 inc vat
spoke to a few companys and they all said very good quality, apparently landrover themselves sometimes use these heads as they are stronger!

That sounds good. Wish I'd known! You'll need to get the new injectors set up on Testbook I believe.

Sorry when i said injectors i meant injector seals, they seem to be a very reputable company, trading for 30 years and only do landrover engines, i had a good look around there workshop and they really know their stuff. As for the head it is substantially better quality, lots more metal around the injectors and nice quality casting, not the rough old stuff in the original head. Guess what im upto this weekend!!

Make sure you put the injectors back in the right order. Worth doing the injector loom too, while you can get at it.

Thanks matash - I'll give Turners a call.
Was yours an early or late td5? I can only see £950 for just the head - is that right? or is that the full kit as you said?
Cheers

Hi, mine is a late td5 and yes it was £950 plus vat for just the head but as they stock all the other parts i needed too and it worked out cheaper to get it all from them.
The price is good as these heads are in stock but when they re order from europe the price is going up due to the weak euro. Think they still have a few though.
Regards Matt

Touch wood i have'nt had problems with that one yet and to be honest my credit card cant take much more at the moment!!

Cheers Matt - I hope they still have one.
One last question - do they use the original casting? If so, how do they beef up the weak area?
Regards
Joe

Hi no these heads use a different casting, the metal around the injectors is roughly twice as thick as on landrovers own heads, if your near to them i would recomend going to see them and you can see the quality for yourself.

Weak Euro??? and why would that make the price go up? It would have the opposite effect.

If the exchange rate was 2euros to the pound and the item cost (for simplicity) 1000euros that would be £500.

If the euro fell the number of Euros to the pound would raise so lets say 3euros to the pound. Still costs 1000euros except now that would work out to £333.33p. SO WTF are you on. and how long have you worked for Turners???

What i meant was bad exchange rate now and no i dont work for turners, only found them on thursday, just thought it would be helpfull to share my experience of them with others on this forum you unhappy little man.

I appreciate your input Matt - that's why I came here, to get useful information that I otherwise wouldn't be able to find.
Redhand - calm down, this is an innocuous thread about helping me find the right way out of an expensive situation - if you've got nothing constructive to add........well I don't need to say it do I?

No worries, am halfway through changing mine over now and its a lot easier than i initially thought it would be so hopefully will be back on the road early this week. good luck.
