arite lads was wondering if any you fellow disco drivers could help ,problem....gear box transfer box leak onto fat bar under box ,i have had this into lr centre about 6 times now going to be 7 soon as weekends over,i payed them to put new seal on my box to stop the slightest drip i noticed...i picked car up got home day or two later i noticed the biggest oil pool in my driving space so i got under the car an the was oil poiring out of the transferbox box an gear box ,the amount that was there was apparent it had begen straight after they touched my car ,i took car back they stripped it down and said see them scratches this has been of at some time it was this metal ring ,they said they changed it with spare one in shop and every think would be fine,drove home parked car went ,went away for few days with kids in are other car came home dived in disco drove couple miles thought i would look agian, looked under neath soaked in oil again so ****ed of now i drive back again they said this time they have checked all breathers so it isnt blocked and blowing seal that is apperntley fine...sealed all up again drove home went about a cpl more miles leak started again i am at my wits end with this now can anyone help with any info as my mate has old baterd td5 and his is bone dry not a leak any were and it has oil in so its deffo sealed up....sorry about my writing

also been cpl more times getten tensioners and fan belts anside steps them new gasket on manifold because of this horrible shreak then had to get it done again coz heli coils wernt holding properly then again **** i hate this car
 
you need different mechanics they are useless if your talking about seals that are in rear of gear box and front of transfer box ,seal collar that sits on rear shaft of gear box is very easily damaged when changing the gear box seal ,it should be removed before changing seal obviously they havent got the tool or brains to do this ,too some extent there will allways be damp patches but a puddle is a different matter
 
when they split the box there is a silver washer that fits in between them is the part they said was failed and causing the leak after there 1st bodje up but i carnt understand how it then got past then next seal which goes around the gearbox an transfer box? then to be re done again and again and again and now again complete joke the fact my mates x reg td5 is bone dry is driving me mad now .surely they can split boxes and seal them together and it stays dry ? what would cause it to leak,is there any issues with mounts? am new to this landy madness so i am lost for ideas
 
also i under stand damp patch but my mates is bone dry an he is off road all time alls i do is drive on motorway and does the bar underneath that consists of multle drips constitute a damp patch or a bodje up ?
 
the odd drip is okay some are spotless others couldnt be made so ,but sounds like your mechanics dont know what there doing and causing work ,output shaft seals are common for leaking (flanges that prop bolts to )and intermediate shaft were it pokes out of front of t/box often looks like a leak between the two boxes,you really need someone who knows what there doing
 
these are supposed to be land rover specialist have only land rover in there work shops one guy on range rovers one on td5 and so on supposed to be next best thing to land rover them selves i give them there due they get it straight in and get working on it straight away but as i said to the guy on counter "you lot are taking the **** now 1st time second third was a joke but now your taking the **** its actually afecting my life now all the arsen round" really am stressed out its acually costing me time money and proberly a few grey hairs with all the bollox do i after go to land rover so they can fix it them selves and then they are given me my doe back if they fix it i must spent about 100 in taxis arsen about back and forth got good mind to make them buy it of me they done my manifold gasket 3 times am actually scared to put my foot down in it in case the manifold starts shreaking again

dealers wouldnt be my choice ,recommended place in your area would be better ,the seal collar if thats what leaked after they tried to fix it would have ben their fault ,they just dont get damaged any other way,leak from between boxes is quite rare (unless someone interfers )its usually like i said some other leak that appears to be
 
i find i mention land rover in garages they start running so i am stook with the so called second best choice which alot people seem to go to for mods an other parts etc...so as getten any one else to try is daunting also the fact they have had the box split numerous times for it to eventually leak again am kinda worried that if i pay any one else to do it i will be basically throwing my money away for a continous problem as i said before i am so ****ed after seeing my mates disco bone dry and the fact he smashes his about aswell is anoyining
 
where about are you ,area not address ,as i said you can **** about or get someone to look who knows what their doing,dealers arent allways best with stuff like that ,maybe a member here near you could give opinion
 
You Need to completely seal your transfer box, remove your t/box and change the input seal (G/box to T/case) also change the 'O' rings on your Int shaft, and take the sump off the box and clane the surfaces up and seal it using Silicone but let it cure for a couple of hours before adding oil. Just remember that when changing the 'O' rings to catch the intermediate gears with a long screwdriver, ideally it is best to knock the 'int' shaft out with a long flat blade, before doing so make sure you've removed the two 10mm bolts on the side of the t/box closest to the intermediate shaft to allow it to be knocked out. Also be very very careful when fitting the t/box because a slight knock on the input seal will allow it to leak oil. That's how we do our t/box's here in Australia.

As for a g/box leak is at the front or only at the rear? Check your rear main seal, and sump gaskets, but it shouldn't be dripping a large amount from the g/box.

thanks for reply i mean it was leaking between the transfer an gear box between were they seal it up together

sorry if my info is **** am crap at this garage stuff
 
as said before made worse by them if it actually was leaking there before hand, many leaks appear too ,never seal with silicone between the boxes ,just leave dry as there supposed to be ,any leak there is desingned to run out between the 2 boxes
 
That will be your input seal then! Common for them to leak if they have been knocked on refit! also if the surface hadn't been cleaned properly before the seal was replaced. I disagree, silicone is great for stopping leaks and yes you can fit it between the two (t/box and g/box) I do it all the time, I'm a full time Mechanic at a land rover specialist garage, just make sure all surfaces are clean beforehand.

you may be, but you dont understand why you dont seal between the 2, the reason you dont is any leak is supposed to run out on the floor not into the other box ,next time you have a t/box off look at rear face of gear box you will see a channel for any oil to leak down through exiting in the bottom hole ,silicone is fine but not between boxes 300 tdi on ,gaskets arent used by lr anyhow sealant is ,
