oil pump bolt came out so I now need to change engine as some-thing is knock very badly and think that a second hand engine is best answer, the question is what other parts to change at same time, oil pump bolt top of list; clutch I think DM /flywheel is on last legs, discovery has to work hard pulling 3.5t trailer alot of time but think I will stick with a new DM/flywheel as it seams to work okay.An idea of best one to fit? Just fitted new fuel pressure valve change most of water pipes last year and fitted new rad 3 months ago. What should I fit at same time? any tips for changing engine would be good

Hi Ian,

Check out the timing belt guides and tensioner while you are there.

Good luck,

Cheers

Hi thought you must have meant chain, I will look at it, the more I can do with engine out or when every thing is off it the better, the engine I have found is a bit under 100k so could last for a bit, rest of car is good underside of car is great because in this part of France they do not salt the roads, in the 11 years I have lived here I have never had to change a exhaust the td5 is 17 years old and still on first system. Down side of not salting roads lots of cars do not rust but do end up up side down in ditches,

I have a RHD 2002 Td5 disco 2 for sale in Poitau charente if any good for you. It is the adventurer 7 seat all the toys fitted standard including front light bar & steps. 3500 euro. 102k miles.

I have a disco 2 Td5 2002 adventurer 7 seat, 102k miles, boite auto, CT neuve, air suspension, toutes options. for sale in Poitau charente, 3500 euro. Drives perfect, but RHD, conduite a droite. If this is any good for you.

hi rover86
very tempting but I must get my disco sorted, trying to sell house and have 2 ford focuses 1 which is little more than a shell, the other my sons girl-friend put in a ditch never of which I can find the carte grises (log book) so can not go to breakers, and now the disco in bits, my garden is starting to look very french, they say you can tell the age of a french-man by counting the dis-used cars in the garden,

No probs, just thought it may have been near the price of a replacement engine here. My 300tdi RR had a new engine & box fitted before I bought it 3 years ago & I have invoices for 11800 euro for the box & 11250 for the engine. Now you know why the french have a garden full of relics, cheaper to buy another car. lol.

I have at last found engine and payed for it just need to get it out to france I have looked and seams no problem to get it sent on pallet here, but need to know what it weights I would think around 350kg it is complete with starter motor and alternator turbo and all, any one know? Also engine comes with ECU that has had a 5 alive up grade, can I just change engine and ECU and all will work or will I need to make other changes? Engine also comes with not very old "up rated clutch" so think solid flywheel, will be intresting to see how well it works,

If you change the ECU you need dedicated tester to set the immobiliser to it... solid flywheel on a D2 is a big Sh*T

Hi thanks for the reply, the td5 flywheel seams to be a point of division some say the solid is better some say stick to what land rover think is best I intended to fit DM flywheel but as engine has come with solid flywheel I will give it a try, I think the one on the old engine was on its last legs and think it was causing some vibration at higher speeds on the gear stick. I will try it and if no good I will let all at Landzone know, when I have look at solid/ DM flywheels all that have payed out to buy one seam to think they are okay, time will tell and so will I. As to installing other ECU I have Navocom do you know if that will allow me to get ECU and Immobiliser talking and working ?

nanocom will do the job, as about the DMF, i was in yoiur shoes myself and believed those who said that the solid flywheel is marvelous and bought a HD kit with a solid one, after less than a month i had to buy a DMF and pay again for labour to change the whole thing cos i was fed up with the noise and vibrations at motorway speeds... beside that even if you are not so squeamish to be bothered by these things IMO you;ll end up ruining the gearbox or engine with it after a longer period... your choice though but IMO those who are pleased with a solid flywheel are mostly defender owners who are using the vehicle mainly for off-road

Hi thanks for your reply it is good to hear from some who has put solid flywheel in and not been happy with it, It is not what I wanted to hear but better to know now than later, I thought the problem was just a bit more noise on tick over which can live with, I do not do a lot of motor way miles but do tow with it and one pl

Hi thanks for reply, not what I hoped to hear about DMF but better to know now, I thought problem was just more noise at tick over which I can live with, The discovery is used a lot for towing and has to pull 2 tonnes plus up some steep tracks so thought maybe solid flywheel a good idea but the DMF has been doing it okay. I would change for the defender but the price difference is just so big.

I personally stick to taking the p155 out of TDCI Defender engines!

I drove one then minutes later my Discovery

What a huge difference.

TD5 FTW

Getting away from the thread I love the D2 and TD5 and think it was the best multi use car/off roader land rover ever made a big statement maybe but if I had a later discovery I do not think I would consider changing engine my self, so it would be finished and scrap, I have driven older discoverys and are great but I did not find them as good to use as a every day car. I have had my D2 for ten years it works hard towing it can run all day on the motorway at 130km and has been alot more reliable than I thought it would be,
