Hi All,

Took me some time to buy one but bought my first Defender three months ago and I'm already at it.

There's a nasty noise coming from underneath the hood, to me it sounds different than just a worn drive belt, are there some experienced ears that I can lend?

First take off your aux belt and run it, if the noise goes you know it's from one of the components it's running, when it's off give the Crank pulley a good tug and see if you have any play in that, mine made a right racket when it was on the way out. If your carefull try putting a long screw driver on various parts and listen that way.

Aux drive belt tensioner, mine sounded the same when the weather was bad a couple of years ago. Replaced it twice finally with genuine LR part before the noise went. It will be obvious enough if you have a look. I think the noise is the spring rattling.

Most belt noises are caused by the auto tensioner bush/bearing wearing allowing the pulley to run out of line with all the other pulleys, this causes the belt to skip hence the squeak
Note not the pulley itself but the bit the tensioner pivots on.
Was a cheap bodge/fix people did with 300tdi ones, google squeaky tensioner and penny.
