Hi All,
I'm thinking about having my TD5 remapped ( Autologic ). Has anybody else had this done - what do you think of the result ? Are there actually any fuel savings to be made - they say in the blurb that there are but I'm dubious. Any advice gratefully received.:confused:

As yours is an early TD5 you may need the chip changing or a plug in chip as it may not be flashable.
 
Gary at TD5 removes the chip and solders in a socket so that he can use a later one. He copies your original mapping onto the new one before making any tweaks.
 
Get the Manifold bolts changed for right ones or they will stretch and brake, due to them geting hotter.
It catches lots.

Thanks chaps, As mine is a 1999 I think I will probably need to change the ECU - does anybody have a clue roughly what that will cost ?.
 
Speak to Gary at TD5 Alive.
No need to change ECU. Old ones can be converted to unpluggable chips.
I'm not on commission but am more than happy with what he did for me.
What he dont know about TD5s and ECUs aint worth knowing.

Sound advice, mine broke and it cost the best part of 200 quid to get it right again... Had to go to the engineers and be reskimmed and all that other crap the garage like to bill you for! :rolleyes:

Why do want it done, TD5 is best deepender engine there is anyway, trouble with these upgrades is you end up driving faster/harder so dont save fuel. Most fuel savings are imaginary
 
I use the defender for my daily commute and get a little fed up with havingto allow other cars at least half a mile when pulling on to main roads. I also pull a caravan and according to all the write ups you hardly notice it on the back when ECU upgraded. Also want to give the Audi A3 owner, who gives me a pasting every morning at the m4 roundabout, the shock of his life ( main reason if truth be told! ).

Great reason:D :D but your TD5 should not feel or be that slow (for a deepender) have you done all the normal stuff first (service, engine cleaners, tyre pressures, EGR removal, intercooler, removed caravan) to get good acceleration first throw out passengers:D

Seriously though my TD5 will do a genuine 100mph (sat nav confirmed) but its still a Defender so not recommended.
It is lively enough to show the boy racers in their poxy Corsas a clean pair of heels up to the legal limit. Catches quite a few out. :)
 
I took the trouble to drive up to Grimsby to have Gary at TD5ALIVE do it while I watched. Equally you can do it via registered post - a lot easier.

Great results - you can now overtake and pull away with confidence and motorway driving and acceleration is much better.

it is now a pleasure to drive and it is so much smoother.

Not bothered about power, but what torque increase have you got and how much money did it cost (if you dont mind me askin):D By the way was the Bentley in reverse:rolleyes:
 
Torque is up by about 20% in my estimation. Acceleration is much better through the gears and it is more like driving a car when pulling out and passing. Towing is much easier as well.
Fuel consumption is about the same. It will pull from 1000rpm in any gear with no hesitation.
I went for the ECU remap and the turbo boost gadget to allow more than 1 bar boost.
I already had a big bore exhaust and larger intercooler with EGR removed.
Total cost, including a return trip to Grimsby (500 miles) was about £750. Its worth taking the motor to Gary as he can adjust the settings whilst on the move until you find a mapping that works for you. He also found that my air meter was kaput which he fixed with a new one from stock. Lastly he cleared all previous ECU faults and reprogrammed another key fob for me whilst he was at it.

I did not go for full on max power (apparently over 200bhp is possible) as I tow a double horse box and wanted better towing manners.

Landy passed its MOT with flying colours and no problems so far that I did not already have. Mechanic even commented on smoke reading as being way better than any he'd seen on similar vehicles.

Not the cheapest but you do get what you pay for.

ps. The Bentley driver was sleeping and I passed him on a dual carriageway as we came off a roundabout. He got the right royal hump and let rip. Must have cost him a fortune in fuel and tyres but it was impressive to see over two tons of car take off like a scalded cat.
 
I find that if you leave the defender in 2nd gear at traffic lights and then give it some serious welly from a standing start, there is not a lot that can live with it ! But when you reach 30-35mph - game over.

Ruddy ell!! Its not a deepender you need its a rangie sport or a lotus elise. Change yer monika to speedfreak:D :D :D
 
I know this thread has been dead a while but I will add a bit to it, if I may.

I have the Griffin 3" exhaust with straight through box plus the Alisport intercooler with the 1.2 ratio road gears. Garry at 5Alive is a bit worried about chipping with the 3" pipe because the gases are being disposed of faster than the original design which required a 10% larger diameter pipe than the turbo outlet. Turbo is 2 1/4" standard exhaust is
2 1/2" - near as damn it 10%. The feeling is that the turbo shaft will over rev and may shear.

I have asked a fair few of their opinion on this and so fan no-one has agreed with Garry but I would like to hear your views please.........?
 
I cant see how the turbo shaft could shear just by spinning a bit faster. It already turns at silly speeds when running flat out. The only thing I can envisage going wrong is the bearing lubrication but if anything the oil pump provides more than enough pressure and flow to ensure the bearing does not burn up. A floating shaft turning at 20000rpm does not require any more oil pressure than one turning at 25000rpm. It may need more flow to help cooling but I'm no expert.
