Hi all
seem to have a high pitched squeal when accelerating, goes away if coasting so don't think its a wheel bearing issue, but no real idea what it could be, any pointers appreciated, not had it long, 51 plate with 170k on clock, done the first auto oil / filter change, next oil change due when weather permits - no garage and lying under it in the wet:eek: is not my idea of fun :oops:
need to check all the brakes so will check wheel bearings then also
 
The usual cause of squealing, especially on start up and sometimes on accelerating is the drive belt on the alternator.
I'm pretty sure that the problem or similar has been discussed on the forum. It could also be a problem with the tensioner pulley.
 
As @brian47 says ...

Does it mostly do it when the engine is cold? Does it do it after half an hour, say, of running?

Usually if it's only squealing when cold it's possibly just cold or damp, if it still does it when the engine's properly warm then the belt's slack and slipping, or a pulley bearing is about to go .. :)
 
Hi, Might also be worth checking your exhaust manifold for soot as they can warp and snap the studs. I supose it depends on your definition of "squeal" :)

Second the exhaust manifold warped, get a 13mm spanner and wiggle your hand in past the turbo to the back two manifold nuts on cylinder number 5, the nuts will move and the noise will be gone next drive and you will think yes fixed it, but give it another day or two and the squeal will be back!

Trust me thats exactly whats going to happen, its did it twice on mine I was right chuffed when it fixed it by nipping it up, then not so chuffed next day when it was back.
Sadly you are not in fact nipping it up you are just pulling the stud/s out of the head,
You can remove the manifold without removing the turbo.
Plenty of info out there on dewebbing the manifold making all but the end two fixing holes slightly larger all to allow for movement.
I did use some m8 nuts with built in rotating washers again to allow the thing to shuffle around.

well if you want warped - :oops:
maybe you could cheque my exhaust manifold - :confused:
only the one on the landy - :eek:
as the other one seems to be in fine fettle :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
 
well eventually found the cause - front prop shaft bearings totally foo barred

removed it replaced all the bearings, back on the Landy and no squeal :D

£50 for the bearing set
8 hours of frustration replacing said bearings - mainly due to the single centre bearing which I had to grind out:mad:

but worth the aggro:) for the quieter drve
 
So how did you finally remove the ctr bearing? any recommendations?

UP in the linky to Discovery 2 got a kit with a puller, what would you recommend?
