Hi All,

Finally got my TD5 but noticed this morning when I first started her up both the Sport & Manual Lights stayed on (Green).
I switched the engine off & re-started, lights stayed out and everything was fine.

Any ideas guys?

probably your gearbox selector switch, some people call it a xy switch, costs about 120 and 30 or 40 for someone to sling it on

Battery been flat or near to flat recently? 'swot does it. Both lights come on, disapear after a restart. Usualy occurs if she's been standing for a long (days) time eg, car sales forecourt. If it keeps doin it, get batt. checked b4 chuckin money at the job. If Batt shows good, then I aint got a clue!!

yeah, check battery first. I had these come up every week or so until i changed the battery (old one was 7 years old)

I had this on mine sometimes, usually if the thing has had water around it or an underbody wash. Should go away after stopping for half hour then re-starting.

Hi i had this go on my 99v disco its the xyz switch i took if off soaked it in wd40 now its fine that was about a year ago now every thing else goes wrong I love it but hate it .

This can happen if your battery is a little bit soft, (not so soft it won't start the car, but less than 100%) and you move too quickly from starting the motor to selecting gears.

What happens is that the battery is slightly 'deflated' from starting the engine and gives a less than perfect signal to the gearbox ECU.

The way to avoid this is:

Start the car BEFORE putting your seatbelt on and other preparations, then select your desired gear and drive away.

I had exactly the same thing last week. Before starting the engine next time try moving the gear selector from park to 1 and back again a few times. It cleared the problem for me and has not re-appeared in three days so far.

Thanks for the replys Guys.

I've had the battery checked out along with the alternator with an auto electrician and everything is working fine. Battery is in good condition.

However, when I now turn the ignition key just before starting up, all the lights on dash board come on and then go out as usuall, except for the M&S lights which now flash green.
This did not happen before.
When the engine is then started the lights then go out. Problem is when I go from Drive to Reverse soon after start up that the lights then come back on?

I take it that this is what the XYZ switch looks like?

Thanks Guys.

Hi Guys,

Just to let you all know it was the Gearbox Selector Switch that was faulty.
Done the job myself with a 10mm socket and a 13mm spanner and took approx half hour, without even Jacking her up and without the Land Rover aligning tool either.
During that time I saved myself just over £100 as that's what the local Dealers wanted :D

Touch Wood, everything has been running fine since.

hi mate thats wot happened to mine , so i bought a new one , fitted it and it was fine , then the box bust and i bought a second hand box which came with the switch fitted , if you want to buy it , its yours for £30

If you still have that switch available I would be interested.

sorry mate dont have it anymore , sold the car and the new switch went with it , good riddins to it . i will never buy another landrover again

I hope you've cured this by now but just in case you haven't...

I had something similar and it seemed to go away after a few random gear selections with the stick. The after a couple of days it came back and the box started chosing odd gears or not engaging.

I limped it to our local LR dealership, paid £45 for a diagnostic check and was told it was a failed xy switch.

Paid the dealership just short of £300.00 all in and it's been fine since. This was about 18 months ago now.

Hope that helps if you're still troubled by it.

The hawkeye or nanocom will diagnose it for you. I had this problem with mine recently. I put my new hawkeye onto it and the vehicle had logged a fault code saying the switch had caused problems. I cleared the fault code and all has been well since. That is strange.

Hi Pat, do you know the procedure for correctly checking the atf level in an LR autobox?

To get the right amount of fluid in the 'box is crucial for good running.
