Hi Again Everyone
Taking the advice given by members on my previous threads to buy a Daignostic system.:) Question is which one is best in your opinion?:)
Have seen the Hawkeye and Lynx at Rimmers, Lincoln(Our nearest Landrover parts drop in centre) but also considering the Nanocom Evolution. I see that Sierrafery has a Hawkeye and a Nanocom and as my preference is for a standalone system think I am moving towards the Haweye or the Nanocom Evolution. Like the idea that the Nanocom has a memory card slot so that I can download the results, bring them indoors and put them up on my desktop AIO.:) But I would like a system that does the best job so Lynx is still in the running! They all seem to come in the £200-£300 bracket so that is not a consideration.
Would like to know which one people feel does the best job? The Hawkeye screen looked rather small and was navigated by buttons whereas I gather from their website that Nanocom is touchscreen. Can anyone tell me the usable screen size of the Nanocom as can't find the dimensions?
Hope someone can help:)
Joy:)

Thanks for the info raywin:) The screen is bigger than the Hawkeye. The current price on Nanocom site is £252.63 inc Vat so I think it has come down in price from the RRP quoted on the Defender 2 Forum.
How do you find it to use and the facilities it offers.

I find it fine tells me all I need to know, I can mount it on the dash with blue tack, and use it live, you can record data onto a memory card. I downloaded a graphing program which allows you to look at the data on a pc so I can drive it a few miles then come back and see the all the readings overlaid i.e. Road speed, engine revs, maf reading all at the same moment, it does quite a few other things too but I have not needed them yet.

Hawkeye is pretty good and made by the official kit manufacturers, pretty robust as well

Nanocomm is pretty powerful but I have little experience of it.

My decision was made simply on availability

Hi MJI
when you say the official kit manufacturers do you mean that this company makes Landrover's own diagnostic - Testbook?

Really helpful - what graphing programme did you use? I have a Windows 10 PC?

With nanaocom , the manufacturers have now released their own graphing software, for analysis, which is downloadable of their website. I have not used it in anger yet tho.

There are differences in what nanocom and hawkeye can do. I saw a list once , but I cannot remember where, Maybe if you listed what you would like to be able to do then people could confirm if they know either one does it.

Cheers

I bought a Nanocom about a year ago, just for its ability to recode secondhand keys. I've not tried to update it at all, just used it on almost a daily basis as it will do the TD5 engine on Defenders too. darn good tool,is earning me money, the only thing I think I use Testbook for is programming fresh ecu's which still happens now and again.
The only thing I dont think it quite has right is the outputs from the WXYZ switch which my Snap On tool can't get right either.OnlyTestbook does all it does correctly, but it can't do s/h fobs.
So if I lost my Nanocom I wouldn't hesitate to buy another, its a good tool.

Thanks for that eightinavee that is really, really helpful:):) I am definitely in favour of the Nanocom but I am only the helper and 'passer of tools' ;) However as I am also the technology person and husband needs me to do that part of our Disco 2 care and maintenance hopefully I will have a big say in which one we buy:( otherwise I might down computer, so to speak!!!!!!!!!!!! Many thanks for everyone's input so far:)

I have both.

A Haweye for my Td4 Freelander and a Nanocom for my Td5 Discovery and keep them in the cars permanently.

Given the cost for a Hawkeye Td5 licence and the "extras" I felt were offered on the Nanocom I went that route. Fortunately I got mine during the Christmas discount.

Personally I prefer the Nanocom hands down, the bright and clear touch display (use a plastic pen cap etc for pin point accuracy on small buttons), memory card back up (some guys have fried their parameters without a backup) and more diagnostics, programming options and parameter changes than I'll hopefully ever need.

"If" you buy either, don't buy an OBD2 extension with it, they're wayyyy cheaper on eBay, the supplied cabling with both units is more than ample for my usage. The Nanocom also easily fits in a gator grip type mount for a smart phone for a live run or they do a pressed cradle for it.

Whatever you buy it's a sound investment, my Hawkeye has more than paid for itself compared to garage diagnostics and repair costs.

Thanks Disco Magic - good advice:) - I like the touchscreen facility offered and the memory card backup. We mainly want it, to start with anyway - to diagnose faults and clear them so my husband can do as much as possible repair wise himself but no doubt we will find other aspects useful eventually:)
Big Red is 17 years old this year and we have had him for ten years. He does an excellent job towing our caravan - just gets electronic glitches every so often - well he is a Landrover:) but passes his MOT every year!!

Husband is just wondering if there is any advantage to the Lynx which has to be used through a laptop in terms of whether it might be more powerful?? Haven't noticed anyone commenting on capabilities of the Lynx. Is this significant?

Doesn't have a huge user base on here I don't think. People like to have their diagnostic in a format that they can carry without carting a laptop about.
Will you have a laptop on you when it plays silly buggers in the middle of nowhere on a rainy night?

Yes we all have Nanocom or Hawkeye, not Lynx, I think the not needing PC is good.

OK folks decision is made:) We are buying a Nanocom Evolution. Just had to ask the last question in the interests of democracy in our household;) I really didn't want to lug a laptop round all the time!!!!!!!
Once again many thanks to all the members who offered really good advice. Much appreciated:):)

Congratulations Joy,

It might be worth looking to see if anyone is trying to put together a group buy. As it can save a fair few pounds, Also when I purchased mine I used a renovo card as it also saved me a fair bit on currency exchange costs.

Cheers
