I think I`ve narrowed my choice down to a Defender 90 TD5 (if i can get one at a good price) and was wondering what they come with, i have read of anti stall, ABS and TC. Do all TD5`s have it all or was it introduced from a certain date, any ideas.

Nope not all.

Not sure as to year probably more likely to be model related i.e. County

They all have Anti Stall. TC, ABS was an option on all but the top models where it was standard so most lesser models won't have it unless it was specified when bought new.

Cheers for the replies, the anti stall sounds worthwhile for someone new to off roading, had a go in an L200 with it and was impressed.

You can still stall them, it's nowhere near as effective on the Td5 as the later Puma models. Still handy at times though for trickling over slippy stuff with no revs. Just so you know, dipping the clutch or using the accelerator will override and disengage it.

Pretty sure mine has none of the above
Unless it's an XS or similar top of the range it won't have TC or ABS unless the original buyer specified it as a cost option but it should have Anti Stall as they all had it. Try taking your feet off everything while driving in high 2nd, as the engine starts to labour you'll feel it pick back up as the Anti stall kicks in.

Does it re engage as soon as the clutch or throttle is released or is it a case of stop and start again

I have heard that the ECU on the TD5 is vehicle specific - so if it blows you can't go to a breaker but have to go to LR for one programmed to your machine? Can anybody comment?

Also is the ECU proper OBD11 compliant, or some bodge up like the Lucas 14CUX on my softdash?

I didn't think my td5 county hardtop 90 had any of these, I will check the anti stall out next time I drive it. I've certainly managed to stall it a few times though.

Ive stalled mine many times. Inc when going slow off road once even reversing.

Deffinatley no TC or ABS for certain,

Mines a county hardtop, it has it. Like I said earlier, you can still stall them and I have mine in the past quite a few times, it's nowhere near as effective as the Puma one.

Get a basic Td5. Iv'e got a 2004 basic model.. No TC ABS heated seat/window etc... It's just more to go wrong. I took the leap from a 300tdi and was a little worried at first with it having an ECU! well after having it a while now, I'm now a fully converted Td5 man and love it :) It's just so more refined on and off the road!!!

The ecu is programmed to your vehicle, you do not have to go to main dealer you can get a used one and get that programmed. When i had mine remapped he replaced the ecu rather than solder in the new chip on site, he may well have backed up the info before replacing it though.

Yeah ECU is vehicle specific. There's an option on my Lynx diagnostic to "to add new ECU"

From what I have picked up it seams the early TD5`s need to have the chip replaced to remap but later one`s can be flashed by the OBD port, does anyone know the year thay changed and whats the cost differance between the 2 remaps is.

Probably 2002 model year at a guess as the engine changed from the euro III (10P engine) to the euro IV (15P engine) version, not sure on price difference.

Cheers, are there any obvious differences to be able to identify if its an early or late motor
