Please forgive me as I am new to this game :)

I have a TD5 with an auto gearbox. I bought the car with a few problems.

Firstly the gearbox does not change up as quickly as it does when it's warmed up. If the sport button is used the gearbox does change down and up when the switch is de-selected it changes up again. This problem predominately happens when the gearbox is cold. I have been advised to change the oil, the clutch packs and then the gearbox (in that order).

Secondly the car does not start all the time (especially if the nose of the car is pointing up hill). If it does not start I have to follow a fuel pump priming sequence which involves leaving the ignition on for 15 secs and then turning the engine for ten times by which time it will start. I am led to believe it is the full running back into the full tank. Is this an air leak or a non return valve?

Pleace help me as I am unsure what to do.

Hi DiscoJak, first of all let me welcome you to the wonderful world of Land Rover forums.

I have a TDI 300 auto (the previous model to yours) and I can tell you that auto boxes never change up early whilst they are cold, that is normal and actually desirable. If they did change up earlier when cold, the engine might struggle at lower revs.

Your comment re the sports switch again sounds to me like normal operation. I just sold a BM 740i, 5 speed auto and that would behave in exactly the same way as yours. Slow change-ups when cold, dropping a gear when sports mode selected.

The poor starting may be something TD5-specific so I'm unable to comment on that.

I hope the gearbox comments put your mind to rest, a little.;)

Perhaps I have confused you, and myself.

When the car is warm the gearbox seems to change gear quite quickly, but when the car is cold the gearbox does not change up but lingers in the gear for a lot longer. This makes the engine rev quite high, which it doesn't do when it is warm .

I presumed that the sport switch is operating correctly

Thanks for your help.:D

Hi again DiscoJak, thanks for the clarification but I think I understood you correctly the first time.

When the car is cold, 1st thing in the morning for example, it is slow to change from first to second, second to third etc. This leads to the engine revving higher than normal(warm). This, I have found to be normal behaviour. Once warmed up, the g/box changes gear more readily and lower in the rev range.

If however, in this cold weather, if you feel you would like the engine (therefore the gearbox) to warm a little quicker, there are a number of options available.

Do you find it takes a few (maybe 5-6) miles before the temp gauge is up to normal?

Also, the auto will not lockup in fourth until the temp gauge is up to operating temperature. I pressume the engine and gear box are set to operate as described to get the temp up as quickly as possible?

Must say, though, that it has taken me a few hundred miles to 'learn' about driving the td5 auto.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the torque converter only works when warm, so yes, I agree it's probably designed-in, to aid the warming process.

I don't notice an appreciable difference when mine is cold - perhaps a bit slower to lock up in fourth but that's all. Have a search around - there are quite a few posts on this topic.

Many thanks for your help on the gearbox issue. I'm not sure how it should operate as I have no long had the vehicle.

Any ideas on the second fault, the not starting due to the fuel running back to the tank. I presume there is a non return valve somewhere in the system.

Hi I had the same starting problem as you on my 300tdi and it turned out to be the sediment bowl at the rear near the tank but there was no visual signs of leaks, so i bypassed it and starts first time every time now, not sure if the td5 has the same setup though.
