First of all folks I would like to say Big Hi to everyone. I have owned various Land rover models through the years but, as I get older and they get newer I find it harder to fault find. So I would really appreciate any help you can offer.

I have a Freelander 2003 Td4 which died on me the other night. The engine management light came on and the Freelander slowed to a halt. I checked for fuel up to the injectors and all is ok! But the engine would not start.

On the off chance I may be able to kick it into life I fired some cold start into the air intake put my foot to the board and magically it started. But, when the revs come down to 1500 the engine dies and it will not start again unless I use the cold start. Above 1500rpm it will run all day. I feel it’s the fuel pump but which one? The one under the rear wing, or the one in the tank? Or am I on the wrong track altogether:confused:


Please can some one help me before I scratch all my hair out.

Take off the injector leak off pipes (carefully!!! or the ends'll break), clamp the pipe before number one injector so no fuel can come out of the ends, turn the ignition on, there should be NO fuel coming from the top of the injectors, if there is then thats your problem.

A leaking injector will cause the primary fuel pressure to drop too low and cause bad or non starting.

Ming! I did a quick search though the threads before posting but I appear to have different setup from most. Instead of having a fuel pump at the front under the fuse box I have one under the rear wing driver’s side and one in the tank. When you say the one at the back I assume you mean the one in the tank which I take it is the low pressure one.

Should both pumps run at the same time when I first turn the ignition on?

ER YEP SORRY NOR they have changed set up in your system....however still same idea pull orft pipe i/p to under wheel arch . . .should **** out [no foam] if that is ok then o/p ,same thing, oh un the fuel relay doe's both pumps, with ign on should drive both pumps fer bout 12secs or till pressure cut orft cuts orft. . .. .if you put yer hand on the pumps should feel them vibrate till cut orft time [good test ] remember the pmp int tank is primary [it also returns fuel from yer high pressure pmp un injectors at a higher tempriture , the other pmp [in your case under wheel arch ] is called a lift pmp [ie, to lift the hieght from tank] to engine main high pressure pmp [fer injectors] um hope this makes sence to you , as i'm er rockit engineer this is jist basic to me. . . .un best oh luck earthling . .:D :D
 
Almost certain that its your rear pump as the same thing happend to my FR. Did all the usual checks, talked to landrover, and as said before it is the rear pump that is week.Change it and away she went (a fair size bill though)
 
Did you here your pump running before it was replaced loatmead?

Took out what I thought was the LP pump in the fuel tank but it appears to be a mixing unit with the fuel gauge sender attached. The wiring to the unit is reading 6.9v.

So it would appear that I only have the one pump, under the rear wheel arch.
Or am I missing another pump somewhere.:rolleyes:

Could it be that this pump is weak and not reaching the required pressure?

Wish I was a rocket engineer it’s gota be easier than this.
Will try and post some pictures if that would help.
 
you only have one low pressure pump and thats the one that lives by the rear wheel, it may be pumping but chances are, it's not getting up to pressure. It needs to be a minimum of 350 kpa (what that is in psi, i dont know) to start the engine.
 
It’s about 3.5bar or 51psi

Can’t find a gauge write now :( will get one tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Just pressure tested the pump under the rear wheel arch. The gauge reached over 100psi before the rubber hose between the gauge and the pump blew!

Would this indicate that the pump is ok! and the problem is else where.

Been up to the injector rail, plenty of fuel spewing out.
Where would one suggest I explore next. Is there any way to check the HP pump?

I really do wish I had a ******** rocket instead of a Freelander Td*******4 it’s got to be easier to sort.

there has bin a write up er hp pmp problems , its er bit techko . . . .but yer seem like a clever earthling. . . .check out search see if yer can find it. . . . .:)
