Hello all. 2005 TD4. In relation to the shock absorber strut assembly front and back. Wanted to ask if the mounting assembly can be removed and renewed by compressing the coil spring and undoing the top nuts that hold the assembly in place? Or is it a matter of removing the whole strut itself. Any advice gratefully received. TIA

Just doing front top bearings on a F 1.

Strut has to come off, then compress spring. The shock is gas filled and would fight you all the way getting bearing or mount off the top with strut on car!!!

If you manage it let us know and I'll send you a cookie!!!

Thanks for reply. Was hoping to avoid removing the strut but I can see that the shock may expand. Will have a think whether shock can be retained in its position. Will let you know. Thanks again.

Just out of interest. When the three securing bolts are taken out I gather the shock will expand up through the bulkhead. About how far will it expand? Is it possible using a long bolts to bit by bit pull the assembly down into position. Are the three threaded holes right through the bulkhead or are they blanked off? All depends how far the assembly will be pushed up by the shock when it decompresses. If it’s only a few inches and the securing holes are clear through the bulk head then a couple of lengths of stud could do the job? Thoughts anyone? Does anyone have an idea how far the shock will come through once the housing released ??and would it be easy to compress it back into position by screwing down the bearing housing flange gradually. Thoughts anyone??

Ah. Of course the stud is already part of the assy. Hmm. Got it. Thanks for all your help. May just take strut off. Probably easier. thanks again.

Nothing will expand unless you undo the centre retainer nut.
The 3 top nuts simply keep the top of the strut assembly securely fastened to the body.
The stut needs to come off to do any work on it, and unless you've done strut work before, and have the necessary equipment, it's dangerous to try.
