My Freelander 1 TD4 has just gone past 92,000 miles.

She is fully up-to-date with servicing and a new auto gearbox around 80,000 miles.

The car is stock apart from a Synergy box. Premium Shell diesel always. I have found the car to be powerful and reliable, a joy to own.

I started the week, with a bottle of Wynn's Diesel Injector cleaner in the tank. Today, all of a sudden, on motorways, when I ask for more power, no more power seems available about 60mph onwards. No matter how fast or gradual I apply the throttle, the car seems very limp from 60mph, and does not want to rev at all. Won't get to, or above, 75 even on the level.

From standstill to 60, the car is it's powerful old self, literally charging like a train. It used to smoothly power all the way to 105 mph (verified by gps) which I occasionally did when it was quiet to 'clear the pipes' as they say. But now, from 60 to 75 is very slow, and 75 seems very weak and is currently as fast as she can be asked to go. Yet up to 60, she goes like a train.

My wallet is trembling. Can anyone suggest the most likely candidates for what has, or is, failing.

Hi, I had the very same symptoms some while back.

Originally I thought it was the EGR valve, I fitted a bypass and problem was still there. It turned out to be the MAF, simply disconnecting it is a good test.

There's plenty of discussion on here and certainly some good guides on what and where to look if you're not sure.

Thanks. I forgot to mention, I fitted a bypass EGR.

If I disconnect the MAF to test, what should I look for as confirmation? When you say disconnect, do I unplug power or a pipe or something? With the MAF disconnected, am I looking for worse symptoms, or less?

[edit]

Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention. I used to always be able to hear the turbo whine/whistle at a particular revs I can't remember. I always heard it, but it has struck me, I haven't heard the turbo whine at all now for a long time. That could mean something perhaps?

Aw crap... just had the bonnet open.

The coolant bottle is bone dry, empty.

Damn, might have done some damage just drivin home. Will refill with coolant mix and take it from there.

I think I got away with that one (coolant level), they always come in 3's don't they?

I tried a first run to heat the coolant. The car did run normally for one run, reaching 95 before I was happy it felt back to normal. Turned around to come home, then the problem returned (strangely intermittent?).

So next, I tried the MAF unplug. Same issue, won't really go above 70mph in automatic gear mode, it get the point where it wants to change up a gear, but 5th gear won't kick in. When I switch to semi-auto sport mode, I can get her into 5th on the motorway, but she won't do much above 75.

Any suggestions what to look at next?
