Question if I may?

Not eliminated the above yet, hoping it is diesel in exhaust. However, whilst looking for clues there are suggestions that low fuel pressure (LP pump) can cause white smoke.

Is this true? If so anyone know why this is? Is it simply an upset of fuel to air mix or something more devious?

I'm not aware that a failing LP pump can cause smoking. Normally the pressure drops off under load, reducing power and putting the MIL on. If the LP pressure is too low, then ECM inhibits starting altogether, to prevent the HP pump from running dry.
 
Air con compressor was easy!!
50 miles before I bought it it had a service. Took wheel off to remove plastic side panel to view and examine compressor and clutch and voila...side panel incorrectly fitted and jammed inside the underframe meaning when air con engaged the end pulley rubbed in the plastic side panel !!

However, needed wheel off to replace discs and pads anyway. Advisory from 3 years ago and discs measured in at 15mm thick!!

Will repaint and rust proof plus my usual popping wheel arch liners out and replacing all fittings with stainless. Mud jammed in behind mudflaps as usual.
 
Finished all the missed servicing. Auto fluid, IRD, Diff.
Replaced front lower grille panel, see seperate thread.
Gunk and pressure washed mess made by leaky turbo hoses.
Just got to refit front bumper and new front number plate and off for MOT.
Last one expired Oct 2023.

Little bit lazy to start, will use it some. All glow plugs are ok. Fine when warm. Glows might be dirty??
 
Sorted the lazy start. Glow plugs all tested fine. No voltage on the glow plug relay. Looked on circuits and the high current lead is fed from a fusible link. Link was intact but no supply at relay.

Popped the engine fuse box off its mounts and flipped over, nothing plugged in to the fusible link output!! Rooted around in the inner wing and found the brown and white lead complete with plug tucked up under the main loom. Looks like it was never plugged in.

Tested that it hadn't been unplugged for sinister reasons, plugged in and all powered up OK.

Engine starts on first flick now and no white puff of smoke.

Possible it got missed at assembly?? Only took 21 years to plug it in. Still, the glow plugs haven't had much electrical use.😀
 
Well done Andy. I've seen something similar before on a FL1, where the glove box light, where the plug for it was still wrapped up waiting to be plugged in to be bulb holder.
This stuff can happen is someone moves production line station, maybe to cover sickness. The person moved over to that assembly station might not know or might forget to plug in items, although it should be picked up in final inspection, and then again at the PDI at the dealer, but sometimes one gets through. When I worked for Citroën, we'd occasionally see a missed item on a vehicle which came straight from the French production line. It was rare but did happen.

At least you'll not need to worry about changing glow plugs

MOT pass today. Clean as a whistle ! Emissions passed even the latest diesel standard at 0.49 what ever it is.!!!
Well done. That opacity test result is very good. You are allowed up to 1.5 m-1, but the test result does depend on how the tester does the test. Do they thrash the engine to the limiter, or just give the throttle a quick blip? The latter is the preferred way now, which replaced the former governor smoke test. The acceleration test was introduced a few years ago, as electronic diesel control prevents smoke at full throttle, and many timing belt failures were attributed to revving the guts out of the engine, so most MOT tester now use the much more gentle and useful acceleration test.

Just one thing I don't like, being fussy. It seems to snatch a bit and follow tram lines in the road (there are many!).
Is this due to the 50 series tyres or was the power steering 'lighter' to the touch on the facelift vehicles? Not driven one over a distance before.

Meanwhile, zinc coating a towbar ready for fitting to haul the Cortina about.

I went to 55% tyres, which eliminated any minor tramlining mine had.
 
Ok so the tyres are the issue. Will probably finish wearing this set out then replace with 55 series. There is a set of 5 new 255/70 x 18 near me but looking at the dimensions that's a few mm too far !!

I have 235/65 x 17 on the G4. They appear to be the max possible so using those dimensions the 255/70 x 18 wouldn't work.

I looked into tyre sizes. The largest without spacers and lifts are 245/55/18, but those put the speedo out in the wrong direction, which is why I went for the 235/55/18 Coopers. It drove beautifully on them, and the speedo was spot on.
