I've posted a query about this on antoher thread but perhaps I should have asked here. (that's a covert apology to those people who've been complaining - or is it whinging?:) - of people repeating questions)

The power loss problems discussed on this thread all seem quite drastic compared to what I notice on my 2005 Td4. Which is a fractional drop in power at about 2500 revs that lasts about a second. And I wonder if this is normal in turbos as I've never driven one before or if it a warning of a problemthat could get worse. Has anybody here with more serious power loss problems noticed that they began like this?

is this wot ytu are talking about ( Bulletin number LN303-002v3 relates to 'Freelander - Intermittent Engine Hesitation')?

with thanks to Fiddler

It sounds like it could be it.
I'm trying to get into the landrover owner site and find those bulletins fiddler was talking about. Will let you know if I can get a read of them...

Rory, you're problem seems to be identical to one of the problems I had. The bulliten says to change the Air mass metor but I can assure you that that did not fix it. It wasn't until the fuel pump was fitted and the clutch was done that the problem seems to be corrected.

In relation to registering for the owners section and viewing the bulletins, you have to enter a company name and compnay registeration number. I was lucky in that once I entered my Irish company name, I did not have to enter anymore company details (needless to say my company is not in the motor industry but I took a gamble and it paid off.)

Anyway my point here is that I printed off the bulletins so I you need them I'll fax them to you.

Or if the web-site wanted I could scan them and e-mail them to someone for inclusion in the site. Obviously I can't keep faxing them eveytime a member needs them.

Thanks fiddler, I'll try and see if i can register..... though I somehow doubt it.

Took the car in today and mentioned this issue of brief power loss at about 2500 revs and he said that I was probably noticing the turbo kicking in. Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder. Does that sound normal to any of you out there....?

To his credit, he told me to monitor it and if he seemed constant or started increasing he'd connect the car to the computer and see if anything comes up

am i being daft here - but the turbo kicking in creates a POWER LOSS!!! - on all Turbo cars I now, you get a kick in the back as it cuts in - NOT a loss!

could this be gunked up hoses causing a prob?

If I'm not mistaken the turbo kicks in at 1500rpm's approx and definately not above the 2000rpm mark.... Anyway as mentioned already, turbo's increase power.

A test : try and excute a quick take-off. Watch the rev counter, just as you release the clutch fully I bet the rev's drop from 2500 rpm's to 1000 rpm's.

Here's aother test : While the engine is idling and out of gear rev it gently to 3500 revs. At around 2000 to 2500 rpm's I bet you anything it gets rough and splutters..... Change your fuel filter (part number WJN 000080) and fuel pump (part number WFX 000181). That part number for the pump is the same number as the old pumps so insist on the pump being a brand spanking new one and not one off of the stores shelf (in case thats a dud too)....
They did my clutch too but I don't think that had any impact on the loss of power too.

Thanks for the tips (I too felt it was a little strange that the turbo could actually reduce power, but hey ho), I'll try out what you advise. And let you know the results. thanks again.

The Turbo on the TD4 does not kick in at 1500 rpm more like 2300, or upwards depending on each car.

If it kicked in that low down it would run out of boost by 3000 Rpm.

Hi there,

I am a new member.
I have a similar problem with my TD4.
I feel it has no pulling power and at times stalls at take off. Also there is a flat spot at low revs. My last TD4 did not have this problem. I am currently taking the matter up with my dealer here in Ireland. Land Rover have a technical bulletin on this problem and it states that the MAF sensor could be faulty and need replacement.

Will let you know how I get on

David:confused:

Thanks for the SUPPORT. Good to be part of the group.
My Freelander also has problem with judder in clutch on take off. This is intermittend. Will let you know how I get on with the dealer.

That's the same as my neighbour had, he got it 'finally' replaced under warranty, thanks to the good advice received by forum members here.

Many thanks. I have brought these problems to my dealers attention last week and I am waiting for them to reply. I am relaibly informaed that land Rover are aware that there is a fault with some clutch components and if customer complains they should change clutch.
Wait and see.

Hi from South Africa. It seems that our dealerships are about as useless as everyone elses. My '04 TD4 sat in the dealership workshop for 10 weeks while they tried to fix this power loss issue and I had to have a few MAJOR temper tantrums at Land Rover South Africa before someone took notice and decided to really look into it.

They changed the head, the fuel pump, the turbo, all the injectors and the MAF but nothing worked. Finally a hotshot mechanic changed the ECU (engine control unit) and lo and behold WHAT A CAR !! All I can say is YEEEHHHAAA, it's everything I could want and more. Apparently, the ECU was sending an incorrect voltage signals. Re-programming did not work - the unit had to be replaced !!

I hope this helps others with their issues - all I can say is that I'm in love with this vehicle.

well guys the guys at MJA landrover in Redditch fixed it for me in the end. After changing the fuel filter things were still no good, so they changed the valveon the turbo itself, presumably the wastegate valve and all is now good
their labour charges are £32/ hour and an oil filter and change cost me £69 inc vat the filter was only 7.85
I would recommend them to anyone with a landy of any description
what exactly did they do

Glad your Frelander is back as it should be. My TD4 after a re-programme has gone fine until recently it is back to having less power.
I will be banging on my dealers door again very soon with a recommendation that they change the MAFM etc.

David

Hi have been reading alot of what your saying about the cutting out and so on and it sounds identical to what i am having with my 51 reg i have had it tested at a 4*4 specialist who has a propper landrover tester and found 2 faults one was FUEL RAIL SENSOR and the other was the AIR FLOW METER he said that i should change the sensor first as this would bring a fault up on the air flow meter even if the air flow meter was ok so he has ordered one and it is bean fitted tomorrow so ill let you know how i get on fingers crossed its this as this is 140 pounds fitted and the air flow meter on its own is about 170-180 pounds im afraid its trial and error hope this helps
