so I recently swapped my old sensor for a new one, along with the harness. No issues until yesterday smelled diesel quite strongly, and then today when checking under the hood and Mrs.wlshyd gunning the throttle, saw diesel spurting from the thread of the new sensor..

Disassembled the engine bay, inlet etc, and went to tighten it up, not even THAT tight, and the damn thread sheared. Thankfully the thread that was left in the hole was loose enough to wriggle out, and I had retained the old sensor that I could stick in the gap for the time being.

So now I am using the old sensor, along with the updated wiring harness, and seems to be no compatibility issues thus far, engine lights etc? Anyone know if there is any issue in this regard? So far he only issue I am seeing is that the plug on the new harness does not quite fit the old sensor perfectly, so have cable tied the plug on to see me through.

One thing - the sensor I bought was a genuine Bosch one but came from a chap on eBay who said it was second hand and was tested before it was sent to me, but as you can see in the image below, the two sensors are rather different. He said that was a Land Rover updated sensor.

* pic to follow in separate post in a mo!

Any thoughts on any of this?

looks to be some bits missing re. the 'new' one .. see pic on this page :
http://www.maltingsoffroad.co.uk/on...-sensor-repair-kit-inc-tech-bulletin/10181492

both types come up under a 'search' .. both named as 'bosch' ..
and some .. like yor 'new' one .. include extra bits .. washers etc ..

freelander td4 fuel rail pressure sensor .. search ..
https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=freelander+td4+fuel+rail+pressure+sensor

don't seem to help when some retailers name it a ' regulator '
http://www.worldcarparts.co.uk/Store/tabid/667/ProductID/7926/Default.aspx

( the ' regulator ' fits onto the hp pump and looks way different to the ' sensor ' )

when it comes to certain engine parts ..
i'd stick with buying from a land-rover dealer
or parts supplier with a good reputation and LR vehicle knowledge base

Thanks. What's weird though is that I have the old sensor in now with the new harness, and all seems well? I was under the impression that the new sensor HAD to be fitted with the new harness...

haha good shout

as i say only issue is that the plug doesn't fit 100% i.e. doesn't 'click' into place, but still fits snug enough and have just had to hold it together with a cable tie to stop it jumping off. So for now at least, all seems well

Dab of hot snot (hot glue) on the plug maybe.

cheers .. although it weren't such a helpful reply as such .. from moi ..
was curious about this bit ..
saw diesel spurting from the thread of the new sensor..
Disassembled the engine bay, inlet etc, and went to tighten it up, not even THAT tight, and the damn thread sheared
thought you might have been sold a dodgy part ..
be why i tried a google 'search' .. not ever having seen that sensor first-hand ..

anyhow .. a.f.a.i.k. .. the replacement harness and sensor fro LR ..
were to address the issue of water getting into the harness .. and plug / socket connections ( pins )
and that LR mainly changed the design of the plug / socket bit to stop water ingress ..
which ends up corroding the metal electrical connectors .. and wiring ..

the working voltage for that sensor is very small .. millivolts to 5v max.
so any dirt / corrosion .. i.e. resistance .. has a major effect ..

so best to ensure that water / moisture has no way of getting into the plug / socket / wiring
' contralube 770 ' .. is a good product to keep electrical connections free of corrosion

Thanks for the responses folks. Having spoken to a helpful chap at Island4x4 he told me the updated sensor is indeed the smaller version, but should be sold complete with an olive and washer as well as per the land rover bulletin, a straight swap sensor for sensor only will not work and it will leak.

So, have found one for £80 with all parts on fleabay - that'll learn me for trying to save money...

Next, albeit small, issue, is that the threads on the jubilee clips holding my intercooler hoses on seem to have given up, so hoses keep blowing off! Small issue, but something else to add!

If your going to buy some new jubilee clips, it's worth looking for the wider ones, 20mm instead of 10mm. For the extra dosh they're alot stronger and I've never heard of one blowing off. Mike

Replaced the clips last night and the old ones must have been on their way out and leaking air under throttle, feels like it has gained an extra few BHP and pulls even cleaner than it did after I put the EGR bypass on. One of the cheaper mods at £2.54 :cool:

I have bought the updated FRP sensor just waiting for it to come, and will replace the glow plugs at the same time

I had a similar issue there seems to be two different sensors up on offer on ebay, one having a shorter thread length and small bore than the other. Took a bit of swearing and a chat with my local parts guy to figure it out. Sometimes best to go to your local parts guy with the sensor and show it to him when ordering otherwise it's a sloppy fitting sensor and diesel all over he place. If ordering on ebay try and get a couple of different offers up and check against each other until you find the one with the correct looking length of thread. Hope this helps.

regarding the 2 types of f.r.sensors ..
if it's an o.e.m. bosch .. there should be a leaflet in the box ..
showing how to assemble the parts .. important to note the serial numbers
as one uses the copper washer .. the other doesn't ..
``````
there's also a difference in torque settings
compared to the old type .. as in the haynes manual
Thanks for your reply got the current one off fitted the new one which leaks. As you can see there slightly different the sensor came with nothing else to install it with any suggestions? The old one is the longer one
The one that leaks is supposed to be used with an adaptor, whereas the original fit's straight in. Smart thinking by BMW.
