As per previous threads, I can get up to about 450 miles from a full tank in my '06 Td4, but the consumption appears to be much worse if I only fill to the 3/4 mark.
Clearly no electro-mechanical fuel gauge gives a linear read-out, but mine often won't budge off the "FULL" pin for the first 100 miles, but then drops while you watch it. And when I turn off, then return a few minutes later, the gauge can be reading less than it was before (without having moved anywhere, or changed gradient even).

Is this a common problem that fellow Freelander owners have experienced?

I have an 06 TD4 and I get exactly the same as you.
Also, around 450 mls to a tank of diesel.

All Rover based cars do the same thing, my Freelander and ZS180 included. If I brim the tank the gauge doesn't move for the first 100+ miles then it starts to fall at an alarming rate sometimes :(
The temperature gauges are the equally inaccurate, they display mid point on the dial with engine temps between 60°C and 110°C!!

All figures are from Parkers Guide

Freelander 1 Td4 Tank size is 59 litres..
1.8 & 2.6 v6 Petrol Tank size 64 litres..

2.6 v6 Petrol is supposed to average 22 mpg..
1.8 Petrol is supposed to average 27 mpg..
Auto Td4 is supposed to average 32 mpg..
Manual Td4 is supposed to average 37 mpg..

All Based on 50 Litres fill
250 miles = 22.73 mpg 2.6 v6 Auto
275 miles = 25 mpg
300 miles = 27.28 mpg 1.8 Manual
325 miles = 29.55 mpg
350 miles = 31.82 mpg Td4 Auto
375 miles = 34.1 mpg
400 miles = 36.37 mpg Td4 Manual
425 miles = 38.64 mpg
450 miles = 40.91 mpg
475 miles = 43.19 mpg
500 miles = 45.46 mpg

Now in the cold weather you can expect to get about 3-5 mpg less than above if you sit and warm the car up before you set off on a cold morning, also the numbers are dependant on the journeys you do, if like me they are all less than 5 miles stop start, I would expect to be doing again about 5 mpg less than above..so it actually works out spot on for me,

I drive a Td4 Auto,,
Short journeys,
Stop start,
Sitting for 5 mins warming up of a morning ,

and I am currently getting about 22-23 mpg as said before,,
about 8-9 mpg less than book..

When it warms up a bit in the spring I would expect about 25-27 mpg
and I will be happy with that..

On a run with the Synergy set on 6 (pierburg maf) and the in cab switch on economy I get app 36 mpg, round town with little traffic app 30 mpg. My annual mileage is app 3000 with most being local short journeys also no Motorways in Cornwall.
 
I'm new to owning a Freelander and after about 8 weeks of ownership of a TD4 I can report the same inaccurate fuel gauge. I use mine for long motorway runs and can easily get 450 miles from a tank.... I only drive at a constant 60mph though :)
 
Still reading approx 7/8 full after 149 miles since top-up! If only the gauge was linear, I'd be getting 1200 miles to a tank!
 
The best I have had is 468 miles to a tank, and that is without the yellow warning light coming on.

The app on my iPhone shows that my best MPG on a full tank is 40mpg, but with my usual town driving, I am usually getting 33 - 34 mpg.

For anyone interested in the app I mentioned, it's called "MPG Tracker" and it's free from the iPhone app store - all you do is put the price per gallon in, total amount spent and mileage reading, and the app calculates everything for you - MPG, average cost per mile, etc, and displays them on graphs for you.
 
My personal fuel consumption ambition is to drive from Aberdeen to Dover on one tankful.

I do the trip 3 or 4 times a year and I haven't done it yet.

Pretty damn near though - last time I chickened out 22 miles short and filled up at Ashford services - 62.85 litres. That's 41.7mpg

ABZ to DOV is exactly 600 miles and to do it on one tank would be just a tad over 43.25mpg.

The entire route is either dual-carriage or motorway so a constant speed in top gear is no bother.

My problem is the car is usually fully/overloaded with a roof-box and in the summer a couple of bikes on the back.

With 2 people and only a tooth-brush each I might get 50mpg :D

Maybe next time I'll polish the car before I set off. :p
 
I generally get about 430 miles per tank. The wife manages more but she does drive at about 45-50 mph on motorways while I think we're going to be killed!
