have got a 04 TD4 Freelander won't start cold has been starting with easy start.I have replace glow plugs and air filters Diesel filter is next.Do I have to do anything special like prime the filter,or removing the battery. I have noticed a earth point on the housing for filter is it need.If she stil won't start cold any one no what next?
 
Diesel system is self priming, put ignition into position 2, you'll hear the pumps whirring , it should bleed the air out itself. Earth's are always there for a reason, so put it back.
Is the battery any good? If over 5 years old, I'd replace it.

often those earth leads on the pump come off due to rust you do need to get it back on but I do not think that's your problem is it running ok once started
 
The main reason a diesel will not start cold is lack of compression.

I have not done a diesel compression check but what I expect etc you do is remove the injectors and use that to do the test.
First I do a check on each cylinder. If it's good then stop there. If it's very low I pour in a couple of caps of engine oil and redo the test.
If the measurements are the same meaning low, then it's valves. If it rises a lot then it's piston rings. That's a rule of thumb, I once stripped and engine expecting to re-lap the valves on one cylinder to find the piston had a hole in the top. Due the very lean running.
Might be something else, but I would be checking that as well as timing.
 
How long have you been using Easy Start? There's a theory that engines get addicted to it. Eventually they won't start without it, so the theory goes. I've yet to see any definitive proof either way. Maybe your TD4 is the proof?
However there are several reasons why it wont start from cold.
For instance, is the high pressure fuel pump giving enough pressure? Is the low pressure pump giving sufficient pressure? Is the glow plug voltage correct?
