what is the mileage on it if it is high check the bottom pulley but first have a look around it to see it you can see any metal swarf that looks like fair dust best with a torch
 
Its at 87000 miles atm. Ive checked the pulleys and they seem fine, hard to get a good look though but the noise seem to come from the center right side of the Engine? Took of the covers but cant see anything.. Sounds like a valve of some sort. Car runs great otherwise, except from random freelander cracking noises :)
 
The noise seems to be independent of the engine , theres only the turbo at the back that has bearings , hope its not that :eek: it also sounds like something could be loose , get under car and have a good look !

hmm, i actually thought it had something to do with the turbo seeing as it happens only at around 2100 rpm just as the turbo engages and u get a slight misfire of some sort that can be felt from the exhaust vibrating slight. but theres no smoke and the turbo seems to be working fine otherwise? had a good look under it just the other day when i was doin some fluid changes and couldnt find anything sadly (or happily).. any easy way to get to the turbo and have a look?
 
Hi that sounds to me like one of the driven items on the drive belt is making that noise - if you can get all the tensioners, ac compressor and water and pas pump checked for play in the bearings.

A good mechanic should be able To listen to them to determine which ones make noise.

My Td4 is booked in next week for all new tensioner and idler pulleys, crank pulley and new belts due to noises
 
think its your auxiliary pulley, its also a damper, if you look at the pully, you most prob see a metallic dust, be aware they can fall apart
 
get a long screw driver or even a piece of pipe and be care full and put it on each item and then put your ear to it you should be able to hear the sound on the faulty unit
 
this noise has been bugging me for a loooong time now... but! now its finally gone! turned out to be a heat shield/foil coverig a rubber pipe at the back of the engine. followed it down with my hand and squeezed and moved it abit and thats it, no more sound. if it comes back im gonna tie it down so it dowsnt rattle against the engine.
