Hi guys
When cold my 2001 td4 starts first turn of the key, when the engine is hot nothing happens when turning the key, no clicks, no starter engaging nothing. Leave it to cool down and it starts no problem. The longest I have had to leave it is 3 and a half bloody hours!
Checket all earths, had the starter overhauled, cleaned and recrimped all wires to the starter, engine block, battery etc. Battery is ok, starter checked and overhauled.
Only have trouble starting when hot.

Anyone suggest what to check next? Ignition switch? Hopefully its a DIY fix.
Laid off from work so a dealer repair is out out of the question.

Cheers Freespin:)

camshaft sensor

to test it when motor hot fresh it with cold water after , if you can start you solve your pb!
a french owner have the same problem and found that the pb was the camshaft sensor (this sensor only serve to start engine to synchronize after the ecu doesnt need it)

excuze for my bad english i m french :)

Merci kergoat29

Thanks for that, I will try cooling the motor with water next time, hopefully that will show I only need to repace the camshaft sensor. You advice is appreciated.
Many thanks Freespin.
ps your English is 10 times better than my written French! Well done.

it s not the motor but the sensor that you must cool, my friend put a buck of water on the sensor :)

but a pb on this sensor is the motor crank but not start so i dont think it solve you pb if you starter is not running!

bye

Oh dear............ when the engine is hot my starter does not crank the engine. Nothing at all happens until it cools down. Looks like it is'nt the cam sensor.
Back to the drawing board!
It does fire up on a push............. but not many people are eager to push a freelander a couple of times a day.
Cheers Freespin

Cheers Mate,
Lots of help on this forum and good advice.......

Just through reading the posts I have resolved a rattle, anti roll bar bushes replaced.
Had the shock of my life when I decided to look at my td4 cam shaft breather.............more oil there than the government promised us was in the north sea!

Managed to occupy my mind since being laid off two month ago.

God bless Landys

just changed mine this weekend, and seems to have cured a minor misfire between 2k to 3k revs. maybe coincidence.....

but shocking how much gunk had accumulated. going to change it every 12k during the service as recommended.

The dealer says they are now changing the filters every 12k. Definately part of routine servicing.

Thanks to all that have made us aware of the problem. My independant mechanic has never changed the filter, I guess mine was just changed for the first time 90k !!
