Hi guys, I suspect a new gearbox is called for but am going to ask the question anyway! I have no gears after second, got 1 2 and reverse only, 2001 3 Dr with sports gear box , covered 61000 miles, was going to book it in for a fluid change but I think it's a bit late for that now lol, anyway, does anyone know if this is fixable?

It could be a solonoid valve. It's best to check the resistances of all the solonoids. There's a detailed thread on here somewhere, done by a member called Hippo. Do a search and see what turns up.

Took it to a landy mechanic who tested it all out, no hoper, so getting one off eBay having that serviced then put in, seemed the only way forward. ........

I'd love to know why it's considered BER. There pretty robust units, that don't generally just break. Especially at the modest miles its done.

In most cases Nodge ;) it is caused by an alleged 'land rover 'mechanic' ' (and I use that term VERY loosely!) ...supposedly looking at it - scratching his nuts (closest to his brain) and instead of saying - "honestly mate - I ain't got a clue about these" - they just peddle BS.....

Most 'landy mechanics' have not got much of a clue to start, even less ref: the freelander and even lesser-er-er of a clue re a jatco box.
They should mostly be taken out and shot.

I decent mechanic would do everything possible to fix a broken mechanical item. A fitter, will simply fit another unit. Fitters don't understand or want to understand the mysteries lurking inside the casing!!

I suspect that the oil had not been serviced in its 15yr life, might of had something to do with it! And yes the chap I know has been working on landrover all his life including the hippos lol, just one of those things so best not to dwell on it!

i had that when i first had mine booked in for a mot

sat in the waiting room that had the glass window so u can watch ur car being motd and interested to see how they done off roaders

watched the bloke drive my hippo onto the rolling road to test the brakes,

however there was only one set, to say the least i got out of that office quickly and screamed at him to stop

i think half of the area heard me shout at him, i drove it off there then went back in to see the manager who couldn't apologise enough , but went somewhere else

could just see my hippos transmission being smashed to bits

told the manager to stick to tyres , hadn't lost my temper like that for years , not a proud moment

just assumed they knew what they were doing , talk about heart in mouth moment

Well I got a Bix off flea bay, with 90 day Warranty , bloke put in it on Monday and it is more knackered than the one he took out! needless to say the seller ignoring my calls , so out of pocket again, some people make me sick!

we was trying to avoid that and to find out what was wrong with the original one

u can replace solonoids etc, there is actually a few jatco specialists around and members on here know these boxes inside out and back to front

have u still got the original box, may i ask what u paid for the replacement please

can't u go back to his garage

does go to prove that the mechanic hasn't got a clue ref landies if he's basically bodged it, taken ur money and now lost the cash, worst still u can't use ur landy

Why people take auto boxes to any old tom dick or harry,is beyond comprehension, why not take it to a gearbox specialist who knows what they are doing. Also to buy something such as that type of gearbox, off ebay is just foolish.

At least with a breakers, you know where to take it back to and kick up a stink.... if you don't mind being gored by their Rottweiler

Kiwi breakers have rottweilers too ? :)
Oh yes, had one come charging at me once, all snarling and snapping. Luckily the chain attached to its collar went 'ping' just in time.

The dog was followed some while after by some very civilised fellow, who having disposed of his roach, came meandering along muttering something like "he's OK bro".
You'd think they'd have a grumpy tup ....
Oh contraire Dippypud, the Rotti appeared very happy to be performing his duties :)
