I wonder if anyone has any experience with Freelander air conditioning problems. As it's just starting to get warm again i've just noticed that my 2001 TD4 Freelander's air conditioning seems to be inoperative. There is no difference in air temperature coming from the vents whether the A/C button is on or not. During the winter I have been religiously turning the A/C on for ten mins or so every week as recommended in the manual. I have checked all the fuses and everything seems to be in order. Any advice gratefuly recieved.
 
The easiest answr is that it probably run low on gas, i know people out there will say well it must have a leak well this is possible,but sometimes they just need topping up,when you put the aircon on if you lift the bonnet and look down the left hand side at the bottom is the aircon compressor,it only has 1 wire going to it at the bottom,when you turn the aircon on see if the clutch engages,the front plate will spin the fans will start to run very slow as well,all this said if the gas pressure is low the trinary switch will not let the aircon start and the engine ecm will not start the fans in my experiance which is a fair bit of landys i would go and get the system gas pressure checked 1st then you can worry after that but no pressure no working.
 
The air conditioning unit of my wife's TD4 es (2000X) only tends to be used in the summer when the hot air arrives, and reading the posts here it seems it should be run frequently to keep it in good working order. I'm not sure if this has led to the following problem.

This time last year the vehicle started eminating a horrible grinding noise when the steering was on full lock at pulling away speeds, and after a bit of deduction it became apparent that this only occurred when the A/C unit was on. The temporary solution was not to use the a/c. As often happens the temporary solution was not revisited. Now the hot weather has returned, the a/c has been switched on again and it makes a (seemingly permanent) horrible clattering noise.

I dread taking the vehicle to the dealer wthout having at least some idea of what the problem is and what the likely cost will be and I wondered if anyone could give me advice!

Having received such great advice regarding the maf problem I really appreciate this site :)
 
Richard. . .try topping it up wiv castrol ez fill on ebay got lube in it as this might save ya some dosh,also got leak sealant and die detection all in one , and dead easy ta d i y. . .:)
 
Hi, just had mine 're gassed' as part of its annual service, the manual recommends this to be done every 3 years and it beats crawling around under the bonnet not knowing what you're looking for !!!

Yes I do! 2 ally pipes on the R/H side of the Bulkhead, the rectangular Block should have 2 black covers on it, remove these and you find 2 schraeder valves thats where yer fresh gas goes;) R/H drive I presume
I'd send you a photo, but I'm having hastle:(
 
The valves are different size as well so it is not possible to refill the wrong side of the circuit.

Hi,

Regarding Re-gasing, ive heard that the DIY kits dont get the same pressures as the pro jobs, you can get a mobile Re-gasing company to pop around check for leaks and top up for around £40!

Much better as its been know that the DIY kits can knacker some of the parts in the compressor.

Ps We have a large install at our gym and im constantly in fear of any problems regarding them as them normally bring a big bill! £500 service, £500-£1000 for a new compressor!

Not sure where you guys are going for your service, my re gassing cost £60 inc parts and labour, its worth shopping around cause as soon as you roll up in a freelander they think they're in the money !!
PS the full service with re gassing was £210

The Castrol ez Fill, turned up in the post this morning
10 min later (including a read of the destructons) Nice cool Hippo, result!

Jed! Cheers Mate! Good point.[The valves are different size as well so it is not possible to refill the wrong side of the circuit.]

The valves are the same size, its the pipes that are a different size,
the larger pipe is the LP side which is the one you add the refridge/oil to
And the valves arnt on a block,there on the pipes the blockes further back.
Sorry My memory!???

Just to get back on the subject!
Ey you know when it say's this Castrol ez stuff comes with a pressure guage? Its more of a Tyre guage effort,
You know the one's that push out when you press it against the valve, a cheap plastic one that dunt work
