You have moved to AC with climate control, which I find a pain, winter and summer But with manual controlled AC as fitted to my D1 works fine, and yes the compressor will engage with 500cm of snow on the vehicle.
which IMO is silly(as i want to be civilised and not tell "stupid" :rolleyes:) and means that your sistem is fubar cos it's not supposed to do that

I'm sure that you have the D1 WSM so explain what's that about from the system's descriprion:
"A thermostat is fitted in the airflow out of the
evaporator to sense the temperature of the exterior
fins. Should ice begin to form, due to a too cold
condition, it will signal to disengage the
electro-mechanical clutch on the compressor (1)."

I forgot to say, the D3 a/c system has a variable displacement compressor, and even if you press the Econ button the compressor never truly stops working, I think lowest it can go is 1percent, all controlled by PWM signals.

Yes but there are solenoid valves which are making it just to spin in vain and recirculate withoutt letting the refrigerant into the system when it's cold outside... IMO they overcomplicated the whole thing without any logical reason
 
My first posh D1 a 300 ES manual would not pull away on a steep hill with 7 people on board and the ac on, D2 not much better.

I will have the measure the vent temps on my D3 and report back
Ah but the 300tdi was always a sod for not wishing to pukll away on any type of hill, no matter who was on board.
I put a sports exhaust on mine and it cured that more or less completely!!;)

This was one of the real early ones, so no Doc cat in the exhaust, then the back box fell off!
As an early ES it did not have elec seats and the headrests were clip on jobs to fit the older style seats.

Mine is an anniversary model so 1998, but still no cat in the exhaust. Even my 2000 TD5 has no cat either.
And funnily enough the back box on the 300tdi fell off too!!

Yes, I have seen this sort of thing advertised before and also stuff about how to modify the original pin yourself.
But I prefer to stick with the original to save fuel, and, if you help it breathe more easily which is the point of the exhaust swap, it gives more power but the same or even better economy. Plus it is stainless so shouldn't need changing.
Maybe the thing you have linked to is good on economy, obvs no way of knowing without trying it.

Have a good look, the late 300 DOC cat looks like a small silencer and is normally first one in the system, 300 had it at the end of the downpipe, early td5 did not have it, but later ones did.
Mod of the day was to fit non cat early 300 downpipe

There was deffo no Cat on mine, but of course this could mean that one of the two previous owners made said mod.
My stainless exhaust goes from the bottom of the manifold, i.e. the first connection right to the end with just one box, the last one. It is slightly noisier but not obtrusively so. The bore is wider, as you'd expect.
 
Have you got the rear AC?
Fitting that may help if you can find it, it was fitted as standard/option I think. On higher models.

I've driven mine in 40 deg Cel dry heat (D2/Td5 with all original factory Denso a/c) - it's great; it does have rear outlets as well, and maybe that's what makes the difference?

what makes the biggest difference (i think) is that it has double the evaporators and double the blower fan so it will cool the cabin faster. I have decided to do 2 things:

first remove the radiator and clean everything there properly (radiator, intercooler, condenser)
second fit a higher output blower fan from a pontiac. it is not a direct fit but it is roughly the same size and others have had some degree of success with it.
third, retro fit the rear ac option.

Considering the size and design of the front fan i am 99% convinced mine is a higher output than the original, possibly one of the highest output fan it is possible to fit.

If it's about that fan which you said it's 1680 CFM i'm 101% convinced that it's way much weaker than the original

Rear a/c is quite a rare option in the UK
D1 it is super super rare
D2 very rare
D3 rare
D4 again rare, and after 2016 you could not get it in the UK, apparently due to the adblue system, yet other countries using the adblue engine can also have rear a/c!
