got word from the spaner man that the tapets r to there full travel has any one got any ideas to what is causeing this its a 4.6 hse petrol my dream drive is turning into a night mare ha ha its goota get better cheers to all of you

What problems is this giving you? A tappety sound on start-up?

If he is suggesting they are worn, then replace them - if they are worn is it high mileage?

Parts to do a top end overhaul of a V8 (camshaft, tappets, camchain, sprockets) are less than £300 iirc and make a world of difference to a high-mileage V8. Sounds like you'll need labour costs on top of that.

hi ianmjdun the engine has only done 27000 miles i only drove it for 30 miles and then it cut out its just had new tappets in he put it all back together and still doin the same i think he said its got high oil preasure hope this helps

Blimey, can't see how worn tappets would cause a car to cut out, and yours don't even seem to be worn, are they faulty in that case? 27k miles after overhaul, or total life?

Engines don't usually suffer from high oil pressure, your mechanic is thinking of middle aged golfers, the oil pump has a relief valve but that is more prone to sticking open causing low oil pressure. The tappets are pressurized by oil pressure, but that is only testable off the engine.

If the problem is your car cut-out, then you should be looking at the fuel and ignition systems - a V8 would go on forever with worn camshaft/tappets etc, probably only do 10mpg, but it would still be running.

Need more info.

thanks chaps i will keep you informed get to no more monday when i see him does anyone no were i can get oil way diagrams for the 4.6 engine i think my spanner man wants to have a paroose lol cheers again hopefully it will be sorted soon

Sounds like you need a new 'spanner' man, I know with the earlier engines you sometimes had a job to get the oil pump primed if it's been recently rebuilt, probably the same with these. if it's running you will be able to see if oil is reaching the top end either with the rocker cover removed or looking in the oil filler. If not remove the pump and fully pack it with vaseline and refit it. Mind you if you've run it without oil pressure it's probably knackered.

More info of the exact problem would help.

4.6 has a different oil pump to the early engines, 4.0/4.6 oil pump is driven straight off the crank and will prime itself.

All rover V8's are prone to cam and lifter wear, this will cause a missfire before they rattle unless there's oil pressure problems. If there is wear, the cam AND lifters must be replaced as a set together.

The V8 is a very tollerant engine and will plod on for many thousands of miles even when it's totally shot.

hello pips i got a Q my gear shift selector switch is showing no.3 when in drive and park when in reverse but on the dash its right anybody got any idea or fixes please that would be great :D

re the oil/tappet issue, i'm sure the push rods can be inserted wrong way up, there are also several slightly different lifter designs, dunno what difference it makes other than the obvious lengths. did your spanner man use new lifters, if not then he should have fully evacuated the oil from the inside. basically squeezed em up in a vice, also anything worn like rockers etc need replacing!

re the gear shift, does it do the same in the low range side?

Hi gave briggs tappets sorted now thanxs just the gear selector and left hand stalk now yes when i put it in low range it all flashes and beeps allso the info button and the other button dont work any ideas on both lol sorry to pick ya brains lol i will tell you the full story when ya sitting with a large large drink lol

these cars are prone to leccy problems, its just a case of checking connections and working logically. i guess the connections will be dodgy somewhere. the info button again is prolly the stalk. go get one off a scrapper and try it, clean connections as you put it back on.

Gav,check the dates of the thread....he's likely found a different mode of transport in the past 18 months or so.....unless he changed his "spannerman" of course!!

edit...oh, the tappets are sorted now many moons since the original thread began, but the thread's changed tack completely......maybe move it to a new thread with a heading that identifies it more accurately??
