Hi all,
Have just had the timing belt done on the car and the tacho doesn't work anymore.:(

Have the workshop manual, but doesn't say/show where the wire from the tacho goes.
Mechanic said it goes to the alternator, mate says it goes to the injector pump.
Looked up google and it says it goes to alternator, which is it:confused:

Also,what colour(s) is the wire.

Thanks

What type of tacho you running? The white 8 pin plug on the back carries the power supply, (1-batt pos. 2-Illumination pos 3-ign pos 5 & 6 neg.)
The yellow plug is the sender unit connection to the gearbox drive.
Red (if fitted) covers RPM
Brown (if fitted) output signals to accesories (speed limiters etc)

Colours could be anything really, but the do generally like to keep it near the standard colour codes of the vehicles.

Hope this helps.

Just a quick thought, if it's a Kienzle 1318-24 or Veeder Root 8300 series and the battery has been disconnected, the speed stilus has probably gone to max (Indicating power interuption) open the lid, and if the upper stulus is right up the top, with the ignition switched off turn the white speed needle pick up in the centre anti-clockwise until the stilus is back at the bottom. (don't touch the stilus as they bend very easily)
Put 2 charts in (driver 1 and 2) close the lid, start the motor up and move forward. The needle should go right up to max and then back down again, the tacho is now reset.

Ah, I presumed tachograph...lol

You tachometer runs from the back of your alternator, should be from a terminal marked 'w'

Worth checking they have not broken, trapped or pulled a wire off while they had the covers off. On my 200TDi the loom passes around the front of the cyl head and is easy to trap. Got to be in that area if the belt is all that was changed? My old addage of 'keep it simple' might work so start where the system was last disturbed.
Good luck, John

Probably the single white wire off the back of the alternator.
The previous owner of my old 300 Tdi had the alternator replaced just before I bought it. Tacho didn't work and investigation found they had forgotten to plug it back in. It's just a spade connector on a thin white wire.

I had that with my 300tdi - it was the spade connector on the back of the alternater - kept falling off - I pinched it up with pliers to keep it in place. Just look at the alternater, at the back and low down - you'll spot the connector easily.

mine was the white wire on the back of the alternator too.....

just pinched it with pliers and put it back and now works great

would suggest trying that first, as the one chap said try the simple things first.

Thanks for the suggestions guys,
will look into it when I get a chance.......:)
TO Robsch..
Its a Magneti Morelli A127-65...:)
