Hi all
I have a small bit of surface rust near my rear mud flaps and it’s starting to bug me, so I want to sort it before it becomes a problem.
Can anybody recommend a good rust eater product as there are loads of them out there now! Another silly question, do I need to prime after using a rust product? Also I was going to finish with Black Hammerite smooth but do people rate other black sprays above Hammerite?
P.s. i just get an error if I try to search for rust on the forum!
 
I do not rate modern hammerite so would not use that unless there was no other choice. I also prefer to brush/roller paint to an aerosol as you get a thicker coat of paint which last longer. And with a little practice can give a very good finish. (Remember proper coach build Bentley and rolls Royce used to be brush painter)
My choice of paint for parts is a machinery or tractor enamel as it dries very hard. Although if it is the chassis you are talking about then that is a differant question.

Thank you, i was just installing the google photo app on my phone and managed to lock out my iCloud account (and I’m a bloody it engineer!)

Is that it? A rusty mudflap bracket, what are you worried about? :rolleyes::D

It’s the only real rust on the defender and I can not keep looking at it when I walk past it as it’s bugging me!

Ok, I've just gone back and read the first post, so it is the mudflap bracket. If I were you I'd....
Wash it and if you have a power washer blast between the bracket and the rear chassis member.
Use an abrasive tool - wire wheel, detail sander with emery paper on etc to get the thick of the rust off
Clean it with a degreaser eg panel wipe or brake cleaner.
Apply rust cure. I use Fertan and find it very effective. The products named above will no doubt be good too.
Rattle can etch primer then rattle can black top coat.
If you are really particular, you could skim it with body filler before painting.

Forgot to say I would then use rattle can of cavity wax to spray in between the flap bracket and the rear chassis
 
Another vote for remove it and replace it with a galvanised one. They are very cheap. And if you don’t like the shiny galv then etch prime and then paint black with machinery enamel. When you refit it I would also either Use plenty of chassis wax between the bracket and the crossmember and/or use a spacer so there is a gap. That way it is easy to clean out and you don’t create a rust trap.
