My Disco came fitted with a Superwinch but I can't get it to work!!the solenoid 'clicks' when I switch it and the headlights dim as if the current is flowing but there's no movement. The clutch lever also seems to be stuck in the 'out' position but the wire won't reel off the winch.
anyone stripped one down or got an idea how to tackle the problem.
I'm thinking it's the same as a stuck starter where you rock the vehicle in gear but don't want to damage the winch.
cheers for any pointers.

What model of winch is it? When you say the clutch lever is stuck in the 'out' position do you mean it is on freespool?
 
I think OUT is free spool If you can engage th eleaver you should get the drum to move

If the cable is badly wound in and bird nested to the height of the drum he may need to attach the cable to summit substantial, put the winch in freespool and then reverse up to un-jam the drum.
 
the wire is neatly on the spool and the lever will not shift beyond 90 degrees when 'in' is 180 from where it sits at present. The spool does not seem to want to move but I'm reluctant to unspool any more because I won't be able to stow it.

sounds like the motor is jamed m8
think you wud be best striping it to have a look and giv it a regrease
there not as complicated as they look just make shure you make a note of what comes from where and posably take photos in stages for refrance

The amount of movement on the lever depends on what model it is.
 
i had the exact same problem with my comeup winch, which is the exact same as the superwinch EPi9 - 9,000 lbs/12V. I downloaded the assembly diagram from the superwinch website. When i stripped it down i found that it needed re-greaseing and the brake was stuck. The diagram is really useful when stripping and re-building
 
if ya search on ere,i had probs with my warn winch a while back and got loads of info on what to try and it helped no end..

in the end after changing wiring,earths,2 solenoids it turned out my motor was fooked
 
think you wil find its only the brake thats stuk so you wil probly only have to remove the motor and pul out the shaft that goes throu the drum and fre it up
be cerful wen you pul of the motor tho try not to pul the roter out of the brushes as there a pig to get bak in
 
OK, Update
I've had the gearbox apart and found a problem with the planet gears where the outer ring slips out but won't re-engage. I think its sorted but I need to get the gears all back in the housing which I'm sure will be a straight forward job - NOT!
the other end is indeed a seized motor.
I've got it apart and a fair bit of muddy/rusty water was inside the motor housing. Ive freed the motor so it rotates and cleaned off the commutator and the brushes (which once cleaned don't seem in too bad nick).
My next question is what to clean the rest of the motor with as I suspect the rusty muddy mix isn't the best thing for it.
choices are
water - clean then dry with hot air
thinners, then air dry
WD40 or similar. (have a feeling it will conduct electricity
steam clean with one of those domestic machines and the smallest nozzle.
any suggestions on the above or other ideas?
also after a recommendation for the grease for the gearbox and how to seal the motor to prevent further water ingress?

wd40 dusnt conduct electricity so wud be fine but must be dryed of after as dust and crap wil stik to it and turn into grinding paste and naker it again
 
Update

Gearbox is back together!! (that comment hides an afternoon of fiddling!!!). In retrospect I think it would have been easier to degrease it then re-pack with grease once assembled as it was the sticky gunge in the box (ooh-er missus!) that made it so tricky. I'd now like to pack a bit more grease in and am looking for ideas (thinking of chandlers and some sort of boat grease).
The bearings in the motor have responded well to a bit of aerosol grease forced into them and the motor turns freely, but the motor brushes are corroded in their holders and I am investigating a local electic motor refurbisher for a price to clean it up.
DOH! during the dismantling the solenoid now no longer works but suspect broken wire somewhere.:doh:
