Sorry folks

i'm sure this has been covered many times before, so please feel free to direct me to this question if it's still available ..... has anybody ever welded steel panels in the sunroof on a Discovery, not to keen on rivets or bonding for security reasons, i'm on my 4th Discovery and this issue drives me nuts and i'm about to embark on my repair while i use project and this will be the first body job and have thought about this many times and i plan on doing it but would help if it's been done before ... thanks up front for any help ...

TBH If you're going to all the trouble of pulling down the headlining, then putting it all back up again after you've done what you intend, and removing the entire sunroof assembly so that you can weld in a plate, I'd go so far as to say you're well over half way to repairing it properly, without then grinding the weld flat, priming and finishing a paint job on it.
They tend to leak not around the glass but around the frame on the outside of the roof. Apparently once you have the sunroof assembly out, resealing and refitting is not an over-difficult job.

Correct. New seals to go between the glass and the frame are easy to get, quick to fit and not expensive. Also a quick reseal of the drain hose connectors and check they are not blocked and the job's a good un. Once sorted you do not have to use them, some folk take the fuse out.

Far more easy to fix them, than weld in panels - the roof is thin, and there will be some stresses in it from the press - welding heat might just spoil your whole day.

A simple, quick, and inexpensive fix is to use clear wrap on the roof - they are sealed then!!!

Can confirm they leak around the frame not between the glass and the seal. 10 mins with a quality external clear silicone and both my leaky sunroofs have been fixed for good, and you can still use them.
Don't have to leave bucket in the back of the Disco now. Cheers Ian

I thought mine were leaking and it turned out to be the door seals, I adjusted the top door frames and presto no more water at the headlining.

Thank you all for your replies ....
i will go with removing the roof lining and remove the sunroofs and a good reseal and clean and cross my fingers
if the do leak again in the future i think i will weld some plates in as i have never really use the sunroof in any motor
i have had anyway ... if i go down that road i'll do a blog on my efforts ....

When the headliner is off make sure you test to see if it is (only) the sunroofs. I found out after removing the headliner that they didn't leak at all. LOL
Could have just done the top door adjustment and I would have saved myself a lot of work
