gearbox on the suffix A out.. stainless steel headers out. exhaust off, painted halfway down the chassis
 
Sorry for no response the last day or so.....came down with the bug that the other half had, and spent all of yesterday in bed or hugging the porcelain phone!!

Was fun to give Adam a hand on Sunday, got the engine back to work and pulled the sump off, filled with lovely sludge at the bottom!

Which look in very good nick indeed, also it looks like there is a new rear crank shaft seal, or at least if the 26k on the clock is genuine then it has had a very sheltered life!....

Glad to hear you are back on your feet again Ant. met one of your guys this afternoon.. The van seems to spending more time at my unit !

That's some choclate milkshake in the sump..

This is bit of an interesting engine.. the wear inside is very very low as we have seen, yet the missing spark plugs have allowed condensation to get in there. I'd be really suprised that someone went to the effort to rebuild with new shells rear seal, new rocker covers and then stop at putting plugs in.

It seems perhaps that it has had a sheltered low use life, and once the tin work got hold, perhaps failed an MOT and was left till someone got around to it. which they never did.

As we saw, the gearbox is in excellent shape as was the clutch, flywheel, plate and bellhousing. Perhaps that 26k is original !!


in the meantime.. ordered new springs and shocks last night, new clutch, new clutch bearing, new slave cylinder, etc. ordered some bolts from namrick today. hopefully getting the chassis painting finished andback together this week and the gearbox back on. then the body can go back on..

in the meantime, the wings and boot floor sides arived this afternoon.

And with a 3 foot breaker and with me (at 24 stone) hanging on it like a Gorilla on a truck tyre, that crank ain't moving!

Can Saint of the V8 exorcise the deamons of this V8.. ? will it be saved or will it end up as a coffee table base in kwik-fit
 
Meanwhile, as Ant was having joys with the block, i cut out a 4 inch long rust hole from the chassis ans welded in some new plate slighty thicker gauge than the original. Also cut out the rear side floor of the load bed (boot) and tack welded the new one in place, along with the front wheelarch extension. Hopefully should get the other side done today. got the slam panel stripped and primed too.

Orered paint over stone chip protector for the wheel arches and underside of the sills, should be arriving today. missed a delivery yesterday for the stainless bolts and hardware from namrick as i was out.
 
Having finished last night just after midnight, tidied up the workshop (as the boss doesn't mind me using it, as long as my activities don't distract from work or I leave a mess) so heading home around 1am this morning, I was thinking about the situation and I have upgraded from 3-4 to maybe 6 or 7 (1 being fecked, 10 being this is gonna be simple pimple).

Soaked one of the bores in Solvent cleaner for 10 minutes, then using Scotch Brite (very similar to one of them green pan scourers) and in the bore I tried it on, it cleaned up pretty well, can even still see the honing marks on the wall.....now there is still some stubborn surface corrosion that didn't come off with the brief attempt I have initially made, so with a more concerted effort, time and elbow grease a good majority can be scrubbed off.....leaving the stubborn bits to be attacked with the honing stones.

Pistons I am sure can be cleaned up, worry at the moment is the gudgeon pins are seized solid.

New Con Rods vary in price....Texting with Adam last night, first pass was £130 each, but Rimmers do new at £70 odd each, or recon at £35 odd, or Surcharged at £27-30 odd..... as the only way to get them off the crank was to slowly drift them away and the drift has burred the edges a bit, some can be dressed and cleaned up, but the most stubborn piston con rod was a sod to move, but I'll see what can be down to clean it up.

up to a 6 or 7 !

Not only am i fully appreciative of Saint's work, I would prefer saint doing this that anyone else..

While saint has been going great guns on the block, i've continued with 'triggers broom' AKA the bodyshell. Got the offside rear floor panel weldedn in today, welded up more rust holes, got the front and rear wheel arch extensions welded in, seam sealed the whole lot top and bottom.. reminds me i need to order up another 1L of seam sealer and cut out the near side boot floor, the worst one as it was like lace in the spare wheel well. again the wheel arch had been patched previously so more layer upon layer of metal to remove. gave the seat belt mount point a fist punch and went through.. cut the wheel arch out and ordered up a replacement.

So far.. the only orginal panels left on the body shell are, the bulkhead, extensively repaired with new footwells. The roof. The rear goal post, the door frame, but with A and B pillr bases cut out and repaired, the rear panel side walls with the sliding glass and the main floor center panels and transmission covers (some minor holes that need doing)

At least one side of the body is now done (oh apart from the windscreen posts.. need to pop the screen out and do those as well)

In the meantime.. I'm really looking forward to sain't thread on rescuing a 3.5 engine. The pre 1974 were 8.5:1 compression ratio. and looking around parts are getting hard to find and donor engines that could be used are getting rare too. It would a crying shame to have to re-engine.. so if saint's thread saves one engine then excellent, if it saves another one fantastic.

Too many have been binned in the past us range rover lovers need to keep these things alive !

underbody seal (overpaintable), but the spraygun was missing from the order - 2k paint.

new shocks, clutch, clutch slave, clutch release bearing chaissis bump stops, handbrake shoes, propshaft overhaul kit, new front and rear springs are missing from the order. !!

New rear wheelarch should be in tomorrow so i can then get the nearside wheelarch and boot floor welded in. then the bodyshell is pretty much done apart from popping the winndscreen and seeing to the bubbles around that..

How do you deal with the bubbles? Just grind back, rust remedy and then smooth and primer over the top?
