Hi all

I have a 52plate td5 automatic with 90000miles on the clock. The gearbox was serviced 15000miles ago and had no problems. About a month and a half ago the m and s lights started flashing all the time. I put it into frank ogg landrover who changed the switch and the problem seemed to disappear but 2 weeks after getting it changed they started flashing again. There had been really heavy rain fall so I thought it could be moisture but I put it back in to them. They put it on there computer and couldn't find any faults. They disconnected the switch and said it was a little bit damp inside the connections so they dried it and plugged it back in. The car was fine for a few weeks but has started playing up again. It hasn't rained for a while so it cant be moisture and Im flumuxed by it.

It will either start ok and pull away but seemed to deselect the gear and go into limp home mode with the lights flashing or when you start it the lights start flashing straight away.

I dont really want to drive it but have no idea what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas.......

Thanks

Ryan

It could be as simple as low battery voltage on start up,how old is the battery ? More than 2-3 years and it could be dying.
If the battery voltage and charging system are OK,then there should be a logged fault, what diagnostic computer did they use ? Often other garages call me with faults and say there are no codes but they are using generic scanners that just cant read the car properly, happened just yesterday on an MG ZT.(Uses Testbook T4 same as LR.)
DII autoboxes often go into limp mode as a result of corrupted can messages from the engine ecu, these are often faulty throttle pedals or engine wiring looms rubbing through on the cyl head/block.

^^^ what he said ^^^ regarding battery age/voltage.

Also the MAF meter can give 'dodgy' readings which can manifest itself in the way you describe.

well my M and S lights have come back on so not a level problem after all. Like RYANMC it seems to be ok for a while and then for no reason start flashing causing a lack of acceleration.

I have a problem with my gearchange as well. I have an 02 TD5 ES, and when I put my foot down I have similar problems with the Landy not knowing which gear to change to, changed the MAF filter, loom under the rocker and now I reckon I'll change the XY switch. Hopefully that'll make some difference

Hi all

Sorry I haven't replied quicker. The switch I changed was the xyz switch and all seemed fine but it has started playing up that much now I have had to buy myself another car. The main dealers said they would change the gearbox wiring loom as they THINK thats the problem but wont say if that will cure it plus they will smile nicely at me and remove £780 from my hands for doing so!!! I asked if they could do electrical checks on the loom ie continuity etc and they just looked at me blankly saying oh no it has to be changed. It is really doing my head in now as its such a good car and I don't want to get rid of it but i'm scared to drive it in case it starts playing up again.

I have cleaned the maf, checked for lose connections, replaced the gearbox fluid and everything else in between but cant find anything. I have noticed though it happens more in the wet or with big vibrations ie going over a pot hole or driving down the farm track from my house to the road, so that has made me sure it is electrical( a connection or damp switch???) and not mechanical but apart from that I am at a loss

Oh but I did pluck up the courage to drive it tonight to go to climbing only for the gearbox to be fine but the rear/boot door not to open at all now. The handle is working and everything but the door wont open from inside or out as I had to pull my rack and rope through the back seat. I'm sure it is the lock as the car is locking but beeps, the lights are staying on in the inside and the button to raise the rear suspension just beeps at me indicating there is still a door open although it wont allow me to open it....

Anyone any ideas????? is it the lock and how can I open the door to replace the lock if it is that?

thanks in advance

Ryan

Have a look at the back of the transfer box an identify the gearbox loom coming down through the floor and along the LHS of the gearbox to the WXYZ switch and solenoid multiplug. It can rub on the top rear edge of the transfer box, shorting out the wires. Lift it up and look at it - any signs of bare wires and you have found your fault.Often resleeving the loom and cabletying it away from the sharp edge will sort it.

Hi all

sorry for bringing this up again but im still having this problem.

I have checked the wiring loom which is fine and all levels which are fine and the xyz switch has been replaced.

I think now it is the plastic cover with the wiring/pcb etc at the foot of the lever. The reason behind this is if it starts playing up sometimes the lights next to the lever dont flash but if I tap the plastic cover they start flashing and it flashes the D on the dashboard. Also if I move it through the gears really really slowly its fine but then if i knock the plastic covering it sometimes sets the M&S lights off again.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Oh and can you get this part or is it only from a salvage yard.....
