So, T Belt time - there is a modified kit available, but no way to know if I need the modified kit or not until the timing cover is off (and the 110 disabled) :(

Previous invoices don't show a kit, just a belt number, which stays the same regardless of kit.

I might have had a modified cover, I might not, I might have modified pulleys, I might not

Gaahhhhhhh ......

If you know someone with a boroscope then you may be able to see by looking through the timing cover wading plug hole. Otherwise front cover off isn't too bad (aux belt, fan then the cover itself), no need to drain coolant.

I wouldn't worry about it. Its been running for many years with whatever set up is in there now. just replace like for like. The reason Land Rover changed the design is because some engines were having issues, if yours is not having problems don't worry about it. Mine is an early 300tdi and is all original except for a flanged crank pulley and it's fine.

When i did mine, in the same situation, i just purchased the kit with the modified crank sprocket.

The difference in cost is so minimal its not really worth worrying about.

As it happened, mine was fitted with the modified crank...

...but it looked like this -

So it was cash well spent anyhow!

Get the modified kit, and fit it all - as @julianf said above, its not worth worrying about the extra cost of the pulley. I would also check that the modified support bracket has been fitted to the rear of the pump, though the chances of it having missed the recall are next to nill - if the vehicle is "new" to you, have a look:)

Can you explain what you mean by "modified cover" please?

http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/belt.htm talks about the modifications needed. Looking through the wading plug hole, it looks wet and black (ooerr).
early vehicles needed the modified timing cover - I read somewhere that there was a chamfered case around one of the holes.
Looking at the wet and black, I will order a modified kit - island4x4 do an OEM kit and provide part numbers for the seals too - all ordered!

I spoke to a landrover independant garage a while back - they said they had done loads of crank seals, but, IIRC, virtually no cam seals.

Mine was a mess inside also - the crank bolt had not been done up tight enough, causing ware between the crank sprocket and the crank key, and, i assume, movement which then did for the crank seal.

I used an oem crank seal, and took care when putting it back in (cant recall the exact method, but i think i used the new sprocket, flipped the wrong way arround, as a tool to push the seal in, using the old sprocket as a spacer, to then work against the crank nut)

People (if forums are to be believed) have issues getting them in square, but this seemed to work ok for me.

You will need a crank locking tool if youre hoping to get the bolt done up to a specified torque. Or just get someone on the brakes, and do it up tight, with some locktite.

I'm farming this one out to a local independent :) Stops me worrying about the quality of my work

Thanks for that. Much appreciated.
Surprised there was no official recall - my 95 D1 was done, under warranty, by the dealer as part of a recall, which I thought was official.. o_O - presumably with the STC4095K kit - its still out there, ( I looked on the MOT checker!), so something must be right!!
I will check the current 97's, to see there is any yellow paint...:)

I thought the bottom pulley had to come off to get the cover off? Good idea on the scope though :)
Good point, forgot about that as I just changed the full kit on mine so didn't need to peek inside first, just got on and changed the lot.

well, full kit changed - bottom pulley was rusted on, crank seal leaking, and it had never been modified.....
