had some great fun yesturday till i got well and truley stuck in very thick mud! ive got a champion 12000 winch on the front of my 300 90 and it wouldnt do anything! theres me thinking that a 12000 winch should be able to pull me out of anything am i wrong is it possible that there is a fault with the winch as bought secondhand and it looks quite old?

Use a snatch block to increase the power of the pull and put waffle boards under the wheels after you've done some digging.

yeah what he said, also that would have come out a lot easier backwards.

you can expect the winch to work miracles, they are a handy addition to the self recovery kit, but a shovel a snatch block some form of boards or even scaff boards would have made that a lot easier, the weight of a well bogged 90 in that kind of mud is well beyond a straight pull with the winch i reckon, dig out a path for the wheels and hopefully clear some of the ****e underneath.
 
As said, spending some time doing some preperation work before winching would have worked wonders here.

The weight of the Defender with all the addons, add into the fact its stuck in some slop....your also trying to drag it through all that gloop!

Help your winch and it'll help you, you cant just hook them up and use them as a get out of jail free card lol
 
I've got a champion 9500lb winch on my series and its pulled me out of some pretty boggy sticky places no probs

I would check the winch and the wiring and definitely invest in a snatch block ;)
 
Correct me if i'm wrong but it looks like the winch is mounted back to front cos the free spool lever is on the drivers side so that could be why its not pulling well.
 
Yes mate you are stuck good there
Im glad its not only me who gets stuck in that position

being a newb i aint got a clue and i just guessed when fitting it as there were no clear indications?

that is not well and truly stuck in very thick mud :p
your winch must be fooked
 
Just an idea but when you at standstill trying to get moving, would have thought creating least resistence is the key. Even just removing some of the mud from in front of the wheels and the sides of the front wheels to allow movement will help.
 
can someone please elaborate on the winch please???
is there any parts which can be overhauled or checked or is it even possible for someone to be able to test the pulling power of it?
 
where abouts are you in the country?? Is there any local members that can go have a look and maybe show him how its done? :D

I read his thread as a query about the effectiveness of his winch, not how to extricate hisself??? :confused:

He maybe doesnt know about LZR... he only been here since march, Im givin the guy credit for askin for advice with the winch, and not expectin someone to come and help which some other newbs have done in the past....some newbs would be slated for askin for LZR straight away :rolleyes: :D
 
thanks but im back on tarmac for now ;) a disco came to my rescue it still was far from easy i have to say but its all a learning curve for me atm! p.s. im in Plymouth Devon and the location was a place called Lopwell
