Hi, has anyone ever been to an off road track and just got completly stuck the whole time they were there.

I went to a place today and got stuck for the duration of my visit, eventually getting pulled out by the farmers tractor (2 hours later).

Is this because i'm a total novice and hav'nt got a clue what i'm doing or is it because it's far to wet/muddy/clay'y at this time of year in some part of the world?

It was a bit off putting in one sense but great in another. I did'nt even get round 1/4 of the course. Yet it looked as tough it would be ace if not so wet.

P.S i also fell over waist deep in the muddy icey puddle/rut i was stuck in. LOL

Yes had diff lock engaged and also have BFG Mud Terrain tyres on. Does diff lock engage all for wheels so they all move at the same time because my drivers side front was'nt moving when i was trying to get unstuck with diff engaged??? Also have 1" lift kit and winch which heed a little bit but then got stuck again.
 
dont be afraid to give it some welly..yes be cautious, check out what you're about to drive first, but you need momentum...the most technically advanced vehicle would get stuck if it doesnt have momentum.
I used to go gung ho into mud, get scared & back off & by then its too late.
Gentle but meaningful is the way...
Drop your tyre pressures next time, it helps alot & as Trew said, remember ya diff lock. And you do have to be moving in the first place for it to come on. If you engage it once your stuck, the vehicle will need to move a foot or so before its engaged...

Diff lock as a standard fitment only has a Centre Locking diff...so yes you still get stuck! Unless you add front & rear diff lockers that allow any wheel to turn regardless of what the other wheels are doing you can get into a situation where one wheel spins & the opposite side wheel on the other axle doesnt move, being "cross axled"
 
Few, thank god for that, my diff is'nt broken. I still had fun and so did the missus, laffing her head off at me when i fell over. I went through the ford by mine after to wash her down, the landy that is not the missus, she just washed wellies in the ford. The mud there was bloody clay and it's a bitch to get off and move in when wet, even the farmers son who towed us out said the huge John Deere tractor gets stuck sometimes. I think i'll stick to fords till the weathers better.

Terra Dog, sure your diff is fine, the course you were on is tough for someone really experienced, never mind a newbie. For me it is a balance of taking a difficult challenge on but knowing when it will only end in probs. Sure the next time will bring better results
 
Oh its that bad then. There is a ford near where i live and it says unpassable at all times, it is in good flow at the moment and i think it's nearly 1 meter deep. I hav'nt got the bottle to go through yet is there any advice anyone can give which will convince me to go through it. I have a snorkel and i seeled it yesterday so i think it water tight, i'm worried about getting swept away or knackering the landy.
 
I can see where your coming from K, but seriously it was so muddy, maybe i need more experience. there was a rut where i was stuck that was nearly waste deep, i found out cuz i fell in it LOL.
 
theres easier bits in the middle field and lower field. I was there last week and your right, theres enough mud to go around. As it dry's out a bit, it brings some new challenges, cheers K

for something that deep in good flow, you have to be wary as hell. it's not the depth that will cause you problems in this case, particularly if you've a well sealed snorkel, and all your breathers are raised, but it's the force of the flowing river on the side of your landy.

try walk in up to your knees, and feel the force on your legs, now multiply that by the solid slab side profile of your landy, and it's a lot of force. You can try driving at 45 degrees to the direction of flow if the route allows, which will minimise the issue, but I'd still see it as a "only if I really really have to and it's an emergency" rather than a try and see.

as for getting stuck, yep done it, had to get ladders off the roof to get under the wheels to get out. serves me right for going alone, in the middle of the afternoon when everyone else was at work. lesson learnt though.

Getting stuck is part & parcel of off-roading. Justify it by saying you're exploring your limits/abilities (and the vehicles) and to find them, you need to slightly exceed them then step back a little bit.

As you get more experience, you'll get stuck in more and more complicated positions. I've been stuck going downhill - its possible - I was wedged against a tree.
