Hi All
First time poster but a long term lurker, thanks for all the posts that have helped me in the past
My 1999 Defender TD5 is having trouble accelerating on slight hills even when I drop a gear or two, on the flat with a wind behind I can just about reach 75. I've changed the fuel filter, checked the boost pressure using a nanocom 1.22 bar at full throttle but the Defender still looses at least 15 to 20 miles even on a slight inclime. I'm looking for some one locally who can test my fuel pressure until then any other suggestions from the group would be much appreciated

Hi. If you have nanocom check the air inlet temp, fuel temp and coolant temp when it's gutless cos each of these can affect power, watch them on ''inputs fuelling" not "instrument"... if it was low fuel pressure i presume that the boost would have not built up so much but worth a check anyway
 
Thanks #sierrafery for your reply I will check tonight on the slight incline on the way home.
Checking the fuel pressure is just part of the elimination process, so if I check it it puts it out my mind

They are pretty slow on a standard fuel map. Has it always struggled or has it started recently?
 
Hi Tom over a long period it's just got slower, I never really noticed until just recently when I tried to over take a horse and cart
I've not done anything drastic to the engine apart from regular oil and filter changes,

Have you changed the injector loom, injector seals and washers, and checked that the activator arm on the turbo waste gate is actually moving, not seized up?
 
Thanks Turboman for your reply, I've not done any real work on the engine apart from oils and filters, I checked the actuator arm on the the wastegate and it was free and as the turbo boost pressure was within tolerance I'm assuming the wastgate/turbo is working fine

I would change the injector loom every 25k or so, and the seals and washers every 100k or thereabouts.
It may or may not be related to your current issues, but will probably save you a lot of hassle further down the line.

is your intercooler intact?

I checked the intercooler and hoses and they all seem intact, I'm looking at replacing the intercooler and radiator so I will have a better look when I do

I'm pretty sure the nanocom measures absolute pressure at the manifold so 1.22 bar is actually 0.22 bar above ambient pressure, that seems pretty low to me, mine reads about 18 psi on my boost gauge which is reading gauge pressure I.e. pressure above atmospheric.
May be worth following up on it.

No, the turbo pressure shown on instrument mode is the boost calculated by the ECU by extracting the AAP from MAP transformed in bar... and yes nanocom shows the MAP too which is absolute pressure but it's shown in kPa not in bar... i'm 100% sure about that

I've had a boost gauge on the wastegate actuator hose and it read 15 psi, I adjusted the wastegate until it over boost and then tweaked it back until.the boost error no.longer showed on the nanocom, maybe I measured it at the wrong place I dont know?

The hp side of my fuel pump died and it was exactly like you describe. In the end I couldnt get over 50 mph on the motorway or get up any hills without being in a low gear.
I went down the wrong path looking for boost leaks etc as mine was only boosting to 7psi. New fuel pump and it flew again.

:confused: So how was your's exactly like the OP described when his has almost 18 psi boost? I really doubt that the engine will get to that boost on LP ... in this particular case as long as the boost is up and steady and all the sensor readings are OK but the speed drops uphill my first presumption would be a clutch slip

He says 1.22 bar. Which a is measured at absolute pressure not bar gauge. So their is a difference of 1 bar.
So he is getting .22 bar by the ecu.
So convert that from bar to psi
0.22 x 14 = 3.08

I missed that he said he was getting 15 psi further down the thread, I didnt realise that was the OP. ‍♂️
