Thanks grumpy gel, the noise you explain is the exact type of noise I have. I have removed the crown /pinion and this is the part that has /is completely sheered(will post a pic). The car when engaged into gear is still making this crunching noise and I can't even move the car a full turn of the wheel. Trying to source a ird but looking to charge me a fortune compared to what. I can see on the internet.650 and that is for a 2nd hand part from scrap yard

Not been able to get under the car as yet but it defo seems I need to get anothoer ird.

Before you throw money at the IRD - I would make sure that is the problem and the only problem. Many years ago I had a similar problem with a Triumph - grinding noise and the car not wanting to move - turned out a hub had sheared and the half/drive shaft was just turning and grinding against the hub. Similarly - you need to make sure the splines on the gearbox (where it goes into the IRD) are OK. No use changing the IRD just to find out you need a gearbox.
 
Sorry fellow freelander owners, ordered a recon ird from bell engineering(who have been great) and just waiting for the part to arrive( hopefully today)

Will let you know how I get on, never fitted one before so hopefully shouldn't be too difficult, got some advice from bell also
 
Good luck fitting it, its not too difficult - biggest problem is maneuvering the heavy lump.

You appear to have had a 2002 1.8, a 2006 TD4 and a 2005 1.8 - with all these cars you should know more about Freelanders than everyone else on the forum!
 
No no grumpy gel we bought a TD 4 for my partners father and changed to lhd. He still has it now and absol loves it. We have managed to get the old ird out (2.5 cm) hole in the bottom where the bearing have collapsed. Replaced withvthe refurbed part from bell engineering who have been fantastic and so so helpful. As you mentioned the main problem was getting the old one out it we found it had to come upwards to then manouvre out from underneath, took two of us.

Problem seems to be fixed but now the the 1300 mile trip back next week will certainly rat it.

A happy and not so stressed landy owner

good luck getting back home, they are a great bunch on here giving all this advise ,I will give advise when it is in my field but as I am getting older like many the old grey matter along with my illness attacking it gets a bit worse,I for get sometimes or completely mistake what the person is on about, but any way best of luck

Well done and great you got it going - good luck for the journey back.

Good to see a "Landie Family" - and a Freelander Family at that! Our family started owning Landies after my brother started working for them - so was out of supporting him as much as anything else - but I buy them now out of choice :) Unfortunately he's never been able to get us discounts, but he has come in handy diagnosing problems from time to time.

Top marks as well for taking time out of your holiday to complete the thread so people can see what fixes/outcome there is to a problem.

You defo do your bit to keep the forum healthy and interesting. Its the same with everyone, you can only give advice on your experience - I often see threads go by where I'd like to help the op, but I ain't got the foggyest on the subject - but invariably there's a few who can help. IRDs are an area where I have (painful!) experience and can hopefully contribute.
