When I set the alarm/immobiliser on my 99 defender it either beeps twice or sounds the horn twice. It does one or the other and sometimes both. Is this normal? and does anyone know how to stop it?
I want to use the alarm but its not very sociable if I set it late at night.

The double beep is to tell you it has misslocked (dodgy door semsor). Check all the door sensors. You will probably find that it is the bonnet or rear door sensor at fault. Simply pull the plug off the faulty sensor and it will then arm silently.

Just to say mine was the bonnet sensor bent downwards by 'someone' leaning on it when fixing the master cylinder......... bend it back up into contact with the bonnet when it closes..... Cheers, A
 
mine did exactly the same - turned out there was no bracket on the rear door switch so it never depressed. Disconnected it and it sorted it out.
 
Brilliant, an easy fix for a change. I'll have a look tomorrow. My allotted half an hours spannering has already become one and a half hours.
 
Thanks for the advice. It was the switch under the bonnet. It wasn't making contact with the bonnet. I have bent the bracket up and it works a treat now.
 
anyone know why my alarm fob doesn't set the alarm, but puts the interior lights on when you press the unset unset button. so I am assuming the batteries in the fob are ok as they are putting the lights on. was getting a double beep but bent up the bonnet switch and that has stopped.

Be grateful for any help or pointers.

Presumably you know it's not setting by?

The alarm not going off when you open any door, or

the tell-tale LED on the dashboard doesn't flash, or

you can start the vehicle without disarming as the immobilser isn't working either, or

the immobilser is working, just not the alarm?
 
can open doors without alarm going off and no led on speedo. Haven't tried to start it when set (or supposedly set).
